State of Utah - Jobs Assistant Hatchery Supervisor in WHITEROCKS, Utah

Job Title:  Assistant Hatchery Manager (Wildlife Biologist II) Job Description Do you have a passion for fish and want to contribute to raising a large portion of the fish that fill our beautiful state's waters? If so,the Utah Department of Natural Resources,Division of Wildlife Resources is seeking a Hatchery Specialist who will help propagate fish species and maintain hatchery facility and equipment at the Whiterocks State Fish Hatchery in Whiterocks,Utah. Principal Duties As the Hatchery Specialist,you will:

  • Propagating fish.
  • Feeding fish as directed,using proper feed levels and feeding techniques.
  • Supervise a full-time subordinate.
  • Cleaning troughs,raceways,quiescent zones,and other water management structures.
  • Assisting in spawning,egg picking,receiving,and egg disinfection operations.
  • Learn and assist with necropsies of various fish groups.
  • Gathering biological data and entering data into databases and other agency programs.
  • Assisting in loading fish for distribution and distribution of fish to state waters.
  • Maintaining facilities,equipment,lawns,shrubbery,and hatchery grounds.
  • Inspecting facilities,machinery,equipment,systems,etc.,to verify safety,maintenance,conditions,functions,and quality. 
  • Assisting in the diagnosis and repair of electrical,plumbing,and mechanical problems.
  • Assisting with hatchery tours and helping with non-hatchery division projects.
  • Attending training in various areas of the division and hatchery operations.

The Ideal Candidate Our model person is someone who has:

  • A bachelor's degree in aquaculture
  • Knowledge of and experience with fish production procedures,loading densities,fish stocking
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with coldwater fish culture
  • Basic maintenance and construction trade skills such as electrical,plumbing,heating and air,welding,carpentry,etc. 
  • The ability and willingness to learn new skills
  • The ability to follow directions accurately.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • A valid Utah driver's license

Preference will be given to candidates with a bachelor s degree in a natural resources field. Additional preference will be given to candidates with a master's degree in a wildlife-related natural resources field or other applicable field that is beneficial for the position. Retirement - Utah Retirement Systems (URS):

  • Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems before 7/1/2011 are in the Tier I Public Employees System.
  • Employees hired on or after 7/1/2011 and who have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System.
    • Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to   10% of your salary between both plans (pensi n and 401(k))
    • Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.  
  • Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.

Paid Time Off:

  • Annual and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual,4 hours sick).
  • Annual leave amounts increase with years of service.
