General Summary Statement

Functions as a leader in the department, facilitating comprehensive, efficient, economical, and quality care delivery. Accepts responsibility for the assigned areas under the direction of the Assistant Clinical Manager, Clinical Manager, or Director, creating a culture of safety and high reliability. Manages employee and patient/visitor situations in the moment. Adheres to Nursing Policies and Procedures and Organizational Goals and Objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities of a staff nurse when needed.

  • Facilitates the use of appropriate resources for patients with special needs.

  • Identifies situations that warrant patient rescue and takes appropriate action.

  • Integrates principles of infection control & infection prevention into practice.

  • Uses resources and references for reviewing policies and procedures, medications, and clinical information.

  • Prioritizes and organizes work effectively within assigned shift.

  • Monitors nursing performance and practice, initiating action to ensure adherence to standards.

    Communication

  • Uses effective communication during hand-offs.

  • Organizes information into a meaningful format.

  • Delegates appropriately to unlicensed personnel and team members.

  • Communicates patient care information to the interdisciplinary care team.

  • Provides patient and family education in a manner that is understood, using supplemental materials as appropriate.

  • Communicates effectively in high stress situations.

  • Communicates collaboratively with peers and other disciplines both internal and external to the hospital, promoting respect and teamwork.

    Documentation

  • Documents patient care that is relevant to patient’s diagnosis, problems and reflects patient’s status in an accurate, professional, and timely manner using the electronic medical record and paper forms.

  • Facilitates downtime documentation processes.

    Professional Role Development

  • Develops own nursing knowledge via practice, professional literature, and attending continuing education programs.

  • Promotes best practice by demonstrating a commitment to quality patient care.

  • Serves as a resource person and role model to all staff members.

  • Promotes innovation and creativity in the practice environment.

  • Serves as a mentor and preceptor for new employees.

  • Accepts constructive feedback about performance or behaviors and shows evidence of change.

  • Demonstrates verbal and writing skills that are appropriate for healthcare communication.

  • Adheres to the Department of Nursing Dress Code.

    Department of Nursing and Organization Support

  • Attends assigned committee meetings and contributes to the committees.

  • Communicates support of organizational values and strategies.

  • Supports the following organizational programs: Magnet®, Joint Commission Disease Specific Certification, Nursing Councils, and integrates their standards into clinical practice.

  • Maintains good attendance/lateness standards in accordance with Hospital policy.

  • Supports a system of communication and collaboration with other department managers to resolve interdepartmental issues/concerns to support the development of new programs and to meet the overall missions, vision and goals of the department and organization.

    Departmental Support

  • Promotes the unit(s) goals, utilizing a participative approach. Assists in assuring implementation and evaluation of these goals.

  • Maintains equipment in working order.

  • Maintains the unit in a state of survey readiness at all times. For example, quality control measures, emergency equipment checks, medication preparation area cleanliness, etc.

  • Advances the patient experience through maintaining a quiet environment, ensuring hourly patient rounds, customer service, etc.

  • Attends staff meetings on a regular basis.

  • Represents supervisor/manager(s) in his/her absence.

    Management Responsibilities :

  • Ensures the patient care area is maintained, clean, and secure for patients, visitors, and staff

  • Assists the Director, Clinical Manager, and Assistant Clinical Manager with compliance for policies, procedures, regulations, and standards of care.

  • Utilizes the Performance Management process of planning, coaching, evaluating and developing to evaluate the performance of the unit personnel in collaboration with their supervisor/manager(s).

  • Promotes a safe and quality patient and family experience.

  • Responds to unacceptable behavior by addressing with staff member in a timely manner, reporting incident to their supervisor/manager(s) and documenting appropriately.

  • Facilitates the patient flow process for admission, discharges, and transfers.

  • Integrates interdepartmental communication as evidenced by problem solving.

  • Collaborates with the Unit Leadership and Nursing Administrative Supervisor in maintaining staffing standards, schedules, and assignments.

  • Collaborates with external agencies to facilitate care for patients.

  • Ensures equity and fairness across staff interactions.

  • Creates staffing assignments to support the operations of the department.

  • Participates in QI/PI projects, staff evaluations, and departmental projects.

    Education Training and Experience

    Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program. Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required.

    Licensure/Certification

    Current Pennsylvania RN License.

    CPR, ACLS, PALS certification required.

    CEN or CPEN preferred.
