POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
Monday - Friday.
Full Time, 40 hours per week.
First Shift, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
Location: Waterbury.
Office/On-Site.
NP-2 Service and Maintenance bargaining unit.
THE ROLE
This position is responsible for overseeing and assigning daily duties to a crew of various mechanics; scheduling and assigning daily assignments; establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate with staff, both verbally and in writing; review and evaluate the work of staff and make effective recommendations; time management, workload scheduling and setting priorities.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must indicate that they hold a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with the "tank endorsement," in the "Licenses and Professional Certifications" section of the application, or they will not be considered. Applicants invited to interview will be required to produce a copy of their current valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B, reflecting the "tank endorsement" and valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) at the time of interview, or they will be immediately disqualified.
Incumbents in this class will be required to have a 30-mile residency from the posted job location.
Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept emergency overtime duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever his or her services are needed; mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30.
Various storm events will require employees to stay at work for the duration of the storm, which at times could be up to a period of several days, to include holidays and weekends.
Candidates will be required to bring a copy of their Master Application at the time of interview.
Candidates must show how they meet the required knowledge and experience on their application to proceed further in the hiring process.
Candidates invited to interview will be requested to supply a copy of their Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A or B, with Tank Endorsement, valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) an copies of their last two performance appraisals.
As a support to Highway Operations units, various storm events will require employees to be at work prior to, during, and after a storm or weather event, which at times could be up to a period of several days, to include holidays and weekends. Additionally, in preparation for the winter season, overtime may be required to prepare the fleet and equipment.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Transportation and the Connecticut Airport Authority this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor for an assigned group of Transportation Maintainers and/or Qualified Craft Workers engaged in an area of transportation maintenance or closely related activities.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Plans crew workflow and determines priorities;
Schedules, assigns, oversees, and reviews work;
Establishes and maintains crew procedures;
Provides staff training and assistance;
Conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations;
Acts as liaison with operating units, agencies, and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures;
Requisitions materials and equipment appropriate to the various jobs;
Participates in performing the duties of the crew;
May make recommendations on policies or standards;
May prepare reports and correspondence;
May do preliminary site inspection of assigned jobs;
May be required to stand by for and respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at State-owned airports;

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Knowledge of the materials, equipment and approved methods in the maintenance and repair of automotive and mechanical equipment;
Skills
interpersonal skills;

in the operation, repair and maintenance of automotive and highway equipment;
Ability to
diagnose motor and equipment problems;
use complicated testing equipment and welding devices;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of skilled experience in automotive maintenance and repair.
NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Transportation Maintainer 3.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and experience of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the repair and fabrication of diesel, auto and heavy equipment.
Knowledge and experience in inspecting, diagnosing and repairing routine to moderately complex mechanic problems of diesel, auto and heavy equipment.
Knowledge of Department policies and procedures.
Experience in an acting capacity as a Transportation Maintenance Crew Leader (Automotive Maintenance).
Experience with working effectively a high production environment.
Some experience with Microsoft Computer applications (Outlook, Excel, Power Point, SharePoint).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class will be required to accept assignment to emergency duties including snow and ice removal as required.
Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS
At State Airports: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
A physical examination may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class are exposed to extremes of weather conditions, to frequent lifting of heavy weights, to highly dangerous road and traffic conditions, including exposure to heights when working on bridges, to poison ivy, insect bites and allergy irritants during summer months, and to loud and potentially dangerous machinery.
The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
