Position Purpose

At Saint Mary's Hospital the Student Nurse Internship (SNI) is a 12-month program that starts with an intensive 9-week summer program (includes a week of clinical orientation). Program starts May 20, 2024.

What you will do

  • Work alongside with a nurse in an assistive role as a Professional Nursing Assistant (PNA)

  • Will observe and learn from the nurse the daily tasks being performed on that unit

  • Shadow and learn directly from a nurse preceptor in various areas in the hospital

  • Participate in weekly educational activities designed to reinforce learning in the clinical practice environment

Minimum Qualifications

  • Be entering the final year of a(n) ADN or BSN with graduation expected by spring of the following year

  • Be enrolled full time in an accredited nursing program (ADN, BSN)

  • AHA BLS Healthcare Provider certified

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher required

Position Highlights and Benefits

After successful completion of the 9-week summer program, the SNI will continue their employment within Trinity Health Of New England in a per diem position throughout their final year of nursing school, assigned to a nurse mentor who continues to guide their learning and contributions within the clinical practice environment. SNIs will meet quarterly as a cohort to participate in learning and sharing of experiences.

Student Nurse Interns in good standing will be invited to apply for the 2024 Nurse Residency Program. Our Vizient Nurse Residency Program is designed to support and help new graduate nurses as they transition into professional practice. The program offers 12 months of structured support for newly licensed registered nurses. Our hope and expectation are all eligible SNIs will secure a position in the residency program prior to completing their final of nursing studies.

Eligibility to Fast-track Nurse Residency Program

As a Student Nurse Intern, you will be eligible to apply between weeks 12-15 for a fast-track Nurse Residency position for July 2025.

Work Hours/Shift: Candidates must be able to commit to the 12-month program per the following timeline & milestones:

Week 1:

  • Orientation Weeks 2 - 9:

  • Scheduled for three 12-hour clinical shifts per week

  • Will be expected to work some night shifts

  • Will be expected to work every third weekend

  • Participate in one hour of educational activities per week

Weeks 10 - 50:

  • Work a minimum of one 12-hour shift per 8-week period (total of 5 shifts in 40 weeks) as a Professional Nursing Assistant (PNA)

  • Your hours will be scheduled with your Nurse Manager and aligned with your assigned preceptor, which may include:

  • Day shift or night shifts

  • 12-hour shifts

  • Occasional weekend shifts

  • No holidays or overtime
