MKS Instruments Inc Sustaining Engineer in United States

A Day in Your Life at MKS:

As a Sustaining Engineer at Photon Control Inc., a subsidiary of MKS Instruments, Inc. you play a key role in the design, development and delivery of cutting-edge optical sensor solutions required for advanced semiconductor fabrication. In this role, you will report to the Manager, Sustaining Engineering.

You Will Make an Impact By:

  • Coordinating with suppliers to second source & qualify alternate components and technologies.

  • Maintaining and updating designs of optical, electrical, and mechanical components for a range of optical sensing products, ensuring alignment with project requirements and industry standards.

  • Conducting validation and verification testing of product changes to ensure compliance with performance specifications and regulatory standards.

  • Supporting procurement, quality, and manufacturing, resolving technical issues that are impacting deliverables and/or product quality and reliability.

  • Utilizing various troubleshooting methodologies (CAPA, 8D etc.) to effectively identify and eliminate root causes through corrective and preventative actions.

  • Developing detailed specifications, technical drawings, and documentation to enable the controlled implementation into production post-qualification.

  • Maintaining accurate reports of design processes, test results, and other relevant information.

  • Collaborating with design, development, and manufacturing teams to implement design changes and upgrades that enhance product cost, performance and/or reliability.

  • Proposing and implement innovative solutions to improve product performance and reduce costs.

Skills You Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related field.

  • 5+ years of experience in design and development, focusing on optical, electrical, and mechanical components.

  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) for mechanical design.

  • Strong understanding of optical principles and electrical circuit design.

  • Knowledge of material properties and selection criteria for various applications.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills (NC/CA, FA, 8D etc.), with the ability to effectively identify, analyze, and resolve complex quality issues.

  • Solid understanding of design for manufacturability (DfM) principles and experience providing input on product designs for optimization.

  • Proficiency in product testing techniques, statistical analysis (e.g. JMP, Minitab) and reliability methodologies

  • Excellent communication skills (interpersonal and written) and a proven ability to collaborate with team members and external stakeholders in a fast-paced multi-disciplined environment

  • Highly organized and excellent time management skills, able to develop create project schedules and effectively prioritize tasks.

  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.

Preferred Skills:

  • P.Eng or other related professional designation an asset.

  • Experience with simulation and analysis tools (e.g., ANSYS, COMSOL) for component optimization.

  • Experience with product lifecycle management (e.g. Arena, Agile, Teamcenter etc.)

  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and quality control methodologies.

  • Knowledge of semiconductor wafer fabrication processes and Copy Exact requirements

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Perform activities such as sitting, standing, or typing for extended periods of time.

  • Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, fumes, strong magnets, confined spaces, lasers, microwaves, and vacuum/pressure systems.

  • Flexible and willing to work in very fast-paced environment where tasks and priorities may change often.

  • Excellent time management skills and commitment to meet deadlines.

Compensation:

Salary Pay Range: $70,000 - $104,000 per year. This range is a reasonable expectation of pay for this position, based on a wide range of factors including qualifications, experience, education, training, operational and business needs and other considerations.
