POSITION SUMMARY:

Under immediate supervision, performs work of routine difficulty in servicing automotive equipment and assisting the Automotive Repair Technician in making repairs on various types of equipment; performs related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Rigs upright and operates wreckers to tow disabled or wrecked vehicles and heavy equipment to garage for servicing and repairs

  • Changes transmission oil and filters and drains torque converters

  • Operates tractor-trailer rigs and transports non-towable equipment on trailers to garage

  • Changes tires on various types of vehicles and equipment

  • Repairs a variety of tires, including tractor, heavy equipment, truck and automobile tires

  • Assists Automotive Repair Technician in making major repairs to all types of automotive equipment and fire apparatus

  • Greases, lubricates and changes oil of vehicles and equipment;

  • Makes diagnosis of problems at job sites and takes appropriate action;

  • Recharges and/or installs batteries, battery cables, spark plugs, light bulbs, fan belts and other simple mechanical parts

  • Fills radiator with water and antifreeze;

  • Replaces radiator hoses; replaces windshield wipers, air filters, fuel filters and other accessories;

  • Releases frozen and bound brakes; receives and distributes fuel to City pumps, Fire Division trucks, and above and underground fuel storage tanks; operates service truck and lubrication truck

  • Operates fuel truck to obtain and deliver fuel from refineries

  • Pumps gasoline and diesel fuel

  • Performs general cleaning work in garage

  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools and units used in servicing equipment

  • Maintains various records related to type of work performed, parts and materials used, time spent, vehicle mileage, dates of service

  • Tracks daily work load, mileage logs, stock purchases and ledgers, oil sample analysis, out of service vehicle slips and parts lists for individual vehicles;

  • Enters data into computers and forwards copies of records to appropriate locations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of techniques and proper procedures for servicing a variety of vehicular and non-vehicular equipment

  • Knowledge of proper rigging and towing procedures

  • Some knowledge of various types and operation of automotive and non-vehicular equipment utilized by the City

  • Some knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.

Skill in:

  • Understanding and following oral and written instructions

  • Reading maps and other work-related materials

  • Performing basic mechanical repairs

  • Operating automotive equipment.

Ability to:

  • Work with individuals of diverse backgrounds.

  • Use hand and power tools and special equipment

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, superiors, vendor representatives and clients.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or General Educational Development (G.E.D) Tests equivalency.

  • Two (2) years of experience in servicing automotive equipment.

  • Must possess valid and appropriate license as required by the State of Ohio.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

In this position, the employee will occasionally stand and walk. This employee will be constantly driving a city vehicle. This employee will frequently lift, push, pull, carry, climb and/or move up to 50+ pounds. The employee will constantly walk in all weather conditions. Frequent stooping, kneeling, crawling and crouching may occur with this position. Speaking and listening are constant essential functions of this position.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The employee is frequently indoors and outdoors. This employee will occasionally move vehicles and floor jacks. The noise level in the work environment is loud. This employee will be exposed to dust and fumes, poor ventilation, gases and other toxic/caustic chemicals frequently.

Health Insurance

The City of Toledo is a self-funded medical plan provider that offers a broad network of health services options for its employees. The City also offers a multi-tiered prescription drug plan and dental and vision care services.

Employees are required to pay a monthly premium depending on the employee’s selection of single, single plus one, or family coverage. Coverage is also afforded for qualifying domestic partners, depending on the employee’s bargaining unit. Monthly co-premiums are determined by collective bargaining agreement or Municipal Code.

Group Life Insurance

City employees are covered by a group life insurance plan depending on collective bargaining agreement or Municipal Code.

Ohio Public Employees Retirement Plan

The City is a member of the Ohio Public Employees Retirement Plan (OPERS). All employees who are paid in whole or in part by the state of Ohio, a county, municipality, or any other political subdivision of state or local government in Ohio must become members of OPERS unless they are covered by another state retirement system in Ohio.

OPERS is a pension plan providing fixed retirement benefits every month based on a formula that rewards years of service. The City contributes 14.00% of the employee’s annual base salary and employees contribute 10.00% of their annual base salary.

Deferred Compensation & 401(K)

The City of Toledo offers a voluntary governmental 457(b) deferred compensation plan, which is a retirement savings plan that allows eligible employees to supplement any existing retirement/pension benefits by saving and investing pre-tax dollars through salary deferral.

Contributions and any earnings are tax-deferred (both federal and state income taxes) until money is withdrawn. Withdrawals are taxed at ordinary income levels.

401(k)

The City of Toledo offers a voluntary pre-tax savings contributions retirement plan. The plan is commonly referred to as a 401(k).

Under the 401(k) plan, an employee’s retirement savings contributions are deducted from the employee’s paycheck before taxation. The City does not make contributions on the employee’s behalf. (Contributions are tax-deferred until withdrawn during retirement). Annual contributions to the 401(k) plan are limited to a maximum pre-tax annual contribution, as established by Internal Revenue Service regulations.

Roth 401(k)

The City of Toledo also offers a voluntary post-tax savings contributions retirement plan. This plan is commonly referred to as a Roth 401(k) Plan.

Under a Roth 401(k) Plan, an employee’s retirement savings contributions are deducted from the employee’s paycheck on a post-tax basis. Annual contributions to the Roth 401(k) plan are limited to a maximum post-tax annual contribution, as established by the Internal Revenue Service.
