Hours vary, one day per week, 8:00AM - 2:30PM.

Under general supervision, assists with the transportation program at the Thornton Active Adult Center by driving a 13-, 14-, or 17-passenger van.

Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from Van Driver I, or when filled from the outside, require previous and directly related experience.

Van Driver I:

This is the entry-level class in the Van Driver series. Drives a 13- or 14-passenger van. Incumbents entering this class have limited related work experience.

Van Driver II:

This is the journey-level class in the Van Driver series. Drives a 13-, 14-, or 17-passenger van; have a CDL license and previous experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

(Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

Operates passenger van to drive active adults/seniors to and from activities inside and outside of the City limits.

Ensures the safety of all riders. Performs emergency first aid when required.

Provides excellent customer service, including interacting with participants. Assists passengers when boarding or disembarking from vehicles. Assists passengers with special mobility needs including use of the lift.

Performs pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections. Ensures vehicles receive regularly scheduled preventive maintenance checks as well as other repairs through fleet maintenance. Trouble-shoots minor problems on excursions.

Cleans interior and exterior of vehicles as needed.

Provides errand service for supplies. Assists with packages, supplies, or other items as appropriate.

Provides mail-run for the Thornton Active Adult Center.

Reports any issues and concerns to the supervisor.

Completes mileage and inspection reports daily.

Completes accident/incident reports as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

Van Driver I:

No education or experience required.

Van Driver II:

Requires one year of related work experience transporting passengers.

Licensing/Certification Requirements:

Van Driver I:

Valid Colorado driver's license with a safe driving record.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certificates, or the ability to obtain both within 60 days of hire.

Van Driver II:

In addition to previous requirements:

Valid Colorado Class C or higher Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a passenger endorsement and a safe driving record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the city of Thornton and departmental rules and regulations, policies, and procedures.

Knowledge of activity schedules and locations.

Knowledge of vehicle's requirements and preventive maintenance schedule.

Skill in performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid activities.

Skill in assisting senior citizens with special mobility needs including use of the lift.

Ability to read maps, and signs and locate addresses quickly.

Ability to operate a 13-, 14- or 17-passenger van on city streets and occasional mountain roads.

Ability to demonstrate regular safety checks.

Ability to demonstrate patience and concern for senior citizens.

Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.

Ability to read, interpret, and apply operating policies and procedures.

Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations.

Ability to listen well and communicate effectively with the public.

Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically, and emotionally stressful situations.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, climb, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, make repetitive motions, and be able to function in narrow aisles or passageways. The position is considered mostly medium work; exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The employee is required to have close visual acuity and to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment. The employee is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, hazards, and atmospheric conditions. The employee must demonstrate the ability to remain calm during routine and stressful conditions.
