McGovern Medical SchoolatUTHealth Houston, a leading academic health center, invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), non-tenure clinical track Professor position and Division Lead in theUTHealth Houston Children’s Heart Institute(CHI)as a part of our Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Division at theHeart Center Intensive Care Unit (HCICU)atChildren’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.

The CHI at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital has been named one of the top 30 hospitals nationally in Cardiology & Heart Surgery by U.S. News & World Report. With a referral base that includes regional, national, and international patients our four cardiothoracic surgeons, perform > 690 surgeries per year. Our 20-bed (soon to be 30-bed) HCICU is one of the highest acuity/low mortality units in the U.S. and is complemented by a cardiac intermediate unit with an additional 18 beds (soon to be 24 beds as well).

In collaboration with pediatric sub-specialists at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, the HCICU provides 24/7 comprehensive care for newborns, children, and adolescents. The HCICU offers innovative solutions and provides high-quality, culturally responsive, family-centered care to critically ill infants, children, and adolescents with congenital and acquired heart disease across the full spectrum of disease complexity. We are a leader in biventricular repairs. In addition to pre-and post-operative care, the HCICU provides comprehensive heart failure/transplant services, including mechanical support (ECMO and VAD) from our platinum-status ECMO program.

The selected candidate will contribute to the UTHealth Houston Children’s Heart Institute’s mission as an international leader in caring for children with cardiac conditions, advancing research in congenital heart defects and pediatric heart failure, and training the next generation of specialists who will provide life-saving care to patients.

Position Key Accountabilities:

The Professor of Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Candidate will serve as Division Lead for the HCICU at the Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. In addition, they will also participate in state-specific research, teaching, clinical service, administrative, and other activities, i.e., provide direct patient care and supervision of medical students and residents in clinic and hospital settings, etc.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Developing and sustaining an environment in the patient care units that supports excellence and innovation in clinical practice and patient care through assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and standards that support positive patient care outcomes to include excellent risk-adjusted outcomes.

  • Performing a variety of staff management functions including the interviewing, hiring, evaluating, counseling, and terminating of assigned management, clinical, and support staff.

  • Facilitating, reviewing, and approving the budget for UTHealth Houston and Surgery Services, including estimates of future personnel and equipment needs; ensuring that hospital resources are optimally utilized through participation in strategic planning and financial budgeting processes, and development of practices that achieve specific objectives and resolution of unfavorable performance variances; providing leadership and implementing strategies to provide cost-effective quality care.

  • Providing coaching, mentoring, support, and consultation to clinical managers, attending physicians, research personnel, colleagues, and clinical staff.

  • Serving as a role model in professional behavior and leadership skills, problem-solving ability, and interpersonal skills

  • Delegating authority and accountability to clinical & nursing staff for clinical practice and patient care decisions consistent with professional standards, regulatory agencies, and organizational policies and procedures.

  • Identifying patient and family needs of the populations served; recommending and/or developing new programs and services to meet those needs; assuring that age-specific equipment, supplies, and educational resources are available for assigned units/services

  • Collaborating with UTHealth Houston and hospital administration and physicians to identify future opportunities, and define the direction of department services; developing, and implementing plans to achieve identified goals, including OR efficiency, productivity, and patient throughput targets across the care continuum

  • Maintaining an ongoing departmental Quality Improvement Plan and process consistent with the organizational Quality Management Plan; developing and implementing unit-specific standards, policies, and procedures that guide and support the provision of care and services; continuously assessing and improving assigned departments' performance while enhancing service

  • Reviewing appropriate financial reports and making appropriate modifications in UTHealth Houston and MHH to reduce costs associated with supplies, staffing, and service agreements and/or identify sound alternatives for purchasing equipment and supplies

  • Participating in and/or chairing committees, work groups, and meetings as appropriate

  • Assuring interdisciplinary performance improvement programs are active, maintained, and ongoing. Following up to ensure that complaints have been satisfactorily handled. Collaborating to maintain a focus on providing excellent clinical services.

Qualifications:

  • Texas Medical License or be eligible for a Texas Faculty Temporary License.

  • Board-eligible, or board-certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.

A successful candidate should have completed training and be BC/BE in pediatric cardiology, or pediatric critical care with additional training completed in pediatric cardiac intensive care, or dual Cardiology/Critical Care training. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Preferred applicants will possess advanced Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Fellowship training, have participated in the training of CICU fellows, and demonstrate exemplary leadership skills such as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
