Microsoft Corporation Research Intern - Advanced memory systems in Sunnyvale, California

Research Internships at Microsoft provide a dynamic environment for research careers with a network of world-class research labs led by globally-recognized scientists and engineers, who pursue innovation in a range of scientific and technical disciplines to help solve complex challenges in diverse fields, including computing, healthcare, economics, and the environment.

Microsoft Azure Hardware Systems Infrasturcture's (AHSI) Pathfinding team is seeking Research Interns who are passionate about developing next-generation memory systems. With the increasing size of Artificial Intelligence (AI) models, the team is focused on overcoming the memory wall, which is limiting both memory capacity and bandwidth. The team's goal is to identify memory systems that can bring efficiencies to Azure cloud infrastructure and provide significant business value to Microsoft's software applications.

To achieve this goal, the team is exploring a range of potential research areas, including emerging technologies like Compute eXpress Link (CXL) memory.

Collaboration with other researchers and industry partners is a key aspect of the team's approach. By sharing knowledge and resources, they hope to accelerate progress in this field and develop memory systems that can meet the growing demands of AI workloads. Responsibilities

Research Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, Research Interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Research Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, Research Interns are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other Research Interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

  • Demonstrate feasibility of advanced memory systems.

  • Perform workload analysis using these memory systems.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Accepted or currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science or a related STEM field.

Other Requirements

  • Research Interns are expected to be physically located in their manager’s Microsoft worksite location for the duration of their internship.

  • In addition to the qualifications above, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position.   • Demonstrated ability to develop original research agendas.

  • Interpersonal skills, cross-group, and cross-culture collaboration.

  • Demonstration of publications related to advanced memory systems.

  • Eagerness to work within lab environments if required.

  • Good understanding of compute hardware (HW) platforms.

Applied Sciences IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $6,290 - $12,170 per Monthly. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $8,060 - $13,240 per Monthly.
