Job Description

The Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives, First Scholars, and First-Generation Initiatives Specialist joins the University at an unprecedented time. The Specialist will serve as part of a team to enhance the sense of belonging as Tarleton achieves the Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) status and have recently received the First Scholars designation. Further, Tarleton’s demographic now solidly boasts an average of 50% First Generation students. The specialist provides professional and specialized skills for support in planning, developing, implementing, and managing student development initiatives intended for the support and experiences of all Tarleton students with special emphasis on Hispanic Serving Institution and First-Generation Student Initiatives; management of talent, and budgets will be part of responsibilities as well as utilizing and maximizing campus and community resources and opportunities. Serves as Campus Security Authority (CSA).

Located on the Stephenville campus, the work hours are typically Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with some evenings and weekends required especially during peak designated times (Beginning of semesters, Homecoming, other).

Must be able to work remotely if needed and requested by the University

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

40% Initiatives Development and Student Success Provides assistance with the creation, implementation and maintenance of initiatives. This includes creating, assessing, planning and hosting initiatives and campus-wide programs. Specifically, works with developing all aspects of initiatives. This person will also participate in training initiatives. Additionally, this person will manage initiatives that focus on retention and graduation. Tasks specific to this responsibility include knowledge of retention strategies, grant writing, expense reporting, and cross-departmental collaboration related to Hispanic Serving Institution and First-Generation Student Initiatives. This position would utilize University systems and software in order to follow academic progress. Will support efforts of the Divisional leadership in building and maintaining relationships with faculty, staff, and community partners. The successful candidate will have knowledge of appropriate software (currently such as Excel or Access) for assessment and reporting.

25% Assessment and Evaluation Under supervision of the director, the Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives, First Scholars, and First-Generation Initiatives Specialist helps with the planning, development, implementation to assessment and evaluation of departmental goals, policies, organization and initiatives specifically related to Hispanic Serving Institution and First-Generation Student Initiatives; works closely with professional staff to help achieve departmental outcomes related to student leadership and initiatives; assists with all accountability and assessment reporting through appropriate University software; supervises staff development (full assessment cycle processes. Assists in producing initiative reports.

25% SupervisionResponsible for budget and supervision of staff, as assigned. This includes assigning responsibilities, coordinating staff recruitment, hiring, training and staff development.

Serves as assigned or appointed on initiatives, liaising with partners, volunteer recruitment, logistics coordination, marketing, implementation and assessment. Assist in implementation of or managing calendared events by providing planning, monitoring, implementation, accountability, guidance, and support to professional staff.

10% OtherRepresents the department and Division at university functions when appropriate; assumes responsibility for other special projects and committee work as delegated. Performs additional responsibilities as assigned, for example, coordinates transportation fleets for student travel.

Minimum Requirements

-Bachelor's degree . -One or more years of experience in student affairs work or related specialty with a bachelor's degree. No experience required with a master's degree.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree with five years of experience in student affairs work or related specialty area, which includes development of programming and work focused on student success; OR master’s degree with three years of experience in student affairs work or related specialty area which includes development of programming and work with student success initiatives.

Supervision

Performs work under general supervision; may supervise others.

Salary

Commensurate with experience

The target base annual salary is $39,120 and may be negotiable based on funding availability and candidate experience/skillset in relation to the minimum requirements of this position.
