Criteria Based Job Description Job Title: Registered Nurse Reports to: Nurse Manager Job Code: 3610, 3611, 3612 Approved by: Vice President Patient Care Services Department: Inpatient Nursing Approval Date: September 2020; Update September 2022 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: 3610 Completion of an associate degree program in nursing Internal new graduates may have a minimum of an associate degree program in nursing. 3611 Completion of a baccalaureate program in nursing External new graduates must have a minimum of a baccalaureate degree in nursing. 3612 Master's degree in nursing Experience: External applicants with associate degree in nursing must have 1 year (2080 hours) experience as a registered nurse. For RNs working in a per diem/casual on-call status: Must have at least 1 year (2080 hours) of experience in an acute care setting OR internal RNs must successfully complete their probationary period AND must have at least 1 year (2080 hours) of experience in an acute care setting. See addendum for department specific requirements Licensure/ Registration/ Certification: Licensed as a registered nurse by the State of Minnesota. Demonstrates at the time of employment and every two years thereafter, competency Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers. Registered nurses re-entering the nursing field, who have not completed 520 hours of nursing practice in the past four (4) years must successfully complete a recognized refresher course in order to qualify for employment. Written information of certification validating successful completion of a refresher course must be provided before employment. See addendum for additional department specific requirements. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing. Ability to effectively participate on an interdisciplinary treatment team. Ability to collaborate, develop and maintain effective working relationships with patients, family members, and co-workers. Knowledge of basic computer skills, or the ability to achieve computer competency within 3 months. Knowledge of current nursing practices and techniques. Knowledge of chemistry, math, pharmacology, disease processes, anatomy, and all body systems. Knowledge of emergency procedures and medical intervention techniques. Knowledge of infection control practices and their relation to patient care outcomes. Ability to recognize changes in patient's condition or body systems. Ability to critically think clinical situations and intervene appropriately. Skilled in using basic patient care related equipment and supplies. Ability to set priorities and manage time effectively. Experience: See addendum for department specific preferences Licensure/ Registration/ Certification: Specialty Certification in the RN's area of expertise (e.g. CCRN, Med- Surg, TNCC) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: POSITION SUMMARY STATEMENT: To assess, plan, perform, document, and evaluate professional independent nursing practice at Regions Hospital; to provide work direction for and oversight of the nursing care provided by unlicensed personnel; to perform and document functions such as carrying out the provider's medical orders; to assist providers with diagnostic and treatment procedures; to provide a safe and therapeutic environment; to coordinate, communicate, interpret, and explain patient care services to the patient, his/her family, health professionals and important others; to perform related duties as assigned. MAJOR JOB DUTIES AND TASKS: Percentage Of Time: 1. Performs patient centered, safe, effective, equitable, timely and efficient patient care based on the specific needs of the patient populations served. 40 Works within the scope of a registered nurse. Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates care of the patients served on the assigned unit. Creates and implements care plans that respect that diverse and unique needs of patients served (based on factors such as age, cultural preferences, religious practice, etc.). Re-evaluates and adjusts plan of care as needed. Evaluates effectiveness of care by comparing patient outcomes with those indicated in the plan of care including patient teaching and discharge planning. Revises and updates plan of care based on assessment, evaluation and evidence based practices. Identifies patient safety concerns and actively implements responses to address concerns. Exceptional performance is exemplified by: Consistently accepts or volunteers to manage and coordinate the care for difficult and challenging patient assignments. Consistently demonstrates ability to prioritize workloads, takes accountability and actions to ensure that work flow is maintained. Is a role model by actively addressing, resolving or appropriately referring unit/interpersonal conflict. 2. Communicates effectively with patients and families. 15% Demonstrates professional, respectful and courteous individualized attention to patients and family. Consistently uses AIDET. Conducts Intentional Hourly Rounding and partnered bedside rounding Provides population specific education to patient and family regarding disease process, plan of care and health promotion. Actively involves patient and family in plan of care. Listens effectively, provides population support and feedback to patients and families based on individualized preferences. Is a patient advocate. Consistently makes provisions for patient dignity and privacy. Responds to patient call lights and requests promptly. Participates as an effective unit and nursing department member. 15% Adheres to high ethical and professional standards, shows respect for others. Maintains an orderly, clean unit and environment. Attends and participates in unit and department meetings. Accepts responsibility and accountability for his/her actions and decisions. Demonstrates economical utilization of unit supplies. Accepts responsibility for orienting new staff as assigned. Complies with work rules, standards and policies Utilizes appropriate lines of authority. Manages time effectively including: on time arrival and limiting end of shift incremental overtime Is actively involved in department and organizational improvement initiatives. Stays current on unit communications including but not limited to: email, bathroom briefs, myLearning assignments, and huddles Maintains accurate time card (e.g. corrects missed clockings, signs off on accurate time card minimally every pay period). Commits to personal resiliency strategies and practices self-care.
