The Minnesota Department of Health is seeking a temporary Project Supervisor to lead a team of engagement coordinators and communication specialists and direct the development and implementation of an exciting new project, Students Accessing Public Health Experiences (SAPHE). This project will raise awareness of the role of public health in protecting communities from infectious disease and environmental health threats. The project will engage middle and high school students in public health and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) career pathways to increase diversity in the public health workforce. The project supervisor will oversee curriculum development and implementation through on-site presentations or hands on experiences in Minnesota schools and other education partners. This position will work with established STEM coordinators and other stakeholders to develop a sustainable engagement program in efforts to raise awareness and create pathways for public health as a career option for students.
This is a temporary position and is expected to end June 30, 2026.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
Oversee and manage curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation of the SAPHE project.
Work with subject matter experts from the Public Health Laboratory, Environmental Health Division and Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Prevention, and Control Division to create a dynamic and sustainable student engagement program.
Supervise and align a team of engagement coordinators and communication specialists, providing leadership, training, coaching, guidance, technical assistance, supervision, and direction to all areas of the team including hiring, directing staff, and assigning work.
This position is eligible for telework to applicants who reside in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota or South Dakota. Position locations will be determined by the top candidate and will be based out of one of the following MDH district office locations: St. Paul, St. Cloud, Duluth, Rochester, Marshall, Bemidji, Fergus Falls. Specific schedule will be based on business needs and is subject to supervisor discretion.
Minimum Qualifications
An Associate's degree may be substituted for six (6) months of experience. A Bachelor's degree may be substituted for one (1) year of experience. A Master's degree may be substituted for one and a half (1.5) years of experience. Four (4) years of experience working within governmental public health, including experiences in the following areas:
Experience as a lead worker, with a role in training, coaching, mentoring, and providing direction to student workers or other staff.
Knowledge of Minnesota Department of Health functions, policies, and procedures.
Knowledge of public health careers.
Knowledge of the Minnesota education system and youth organizations.
Knowledge of health equity and role of governmental health in advancing health equity, diversity and belonging.
Additional minimum qualifications to be assessed during the interview:
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate in a clear, concise, effective manner.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in project management and development of conceptual frameworks, work plans, milestones, performance measures, progress reports and evaluations.
Experience leading or facilitating an advisory committee, task force or focus group, working with internal subject matter experts or other external stakeholders.
Experience working with an educational system or a youth organization.
Demonstrated ability to facilitate group meetings, decision-making sessions, and problem-solving processes.
