Summer Road Construction (Seasonal)

  • $14.00 - $16.00/ Hour
  • This seasonal position allows for a maximum of 1,000 hours per calendar year. It does not include any benefits.

Position Availability: Summer 2024 Construction Season

Position Duration: 8 -- 12 weeks

Duties:

  • Performs a variety of unskilled manual labor tasks in support of road maintenance and repair operations.
  • Safely performs all work zone traffic control duties including setting up barricades, traffic cones, and signs.
  • Flags traffic for stationary and moving work zones.
  • Loads and unloads equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Cleans and clears culverts, drainage ditches and other drainage structures.
  • Maintains vegetation using hand and power tools.
  • Cuts, rakes and disposes of brush and debris using a variety of hand and power tools including weed eaters, chain saws and chippers; may pick up trash or other debris.
  • Installs raised pavement markers, thermoplastic markings and other types of traffic channelization devices.
  • Performs asphalt pavement repair, patching and cleaning using a hand and power tools; may manually prepare sub grade for paving.
  • Assists in installing concrete drain tile and culvert pipe.
  • Assists sealcoat operations team.
  • Operates equipment to perform roadside mowing and ground maintenance.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance and cleaning of assigned equipment and tools; completes service requests.
  • Submits neat and complete written and electronic records including time sheets and maintenance history report forms.
  • Drives a pickup truck or light duty diesel truck.
  • May operate a computer, mobile data collector, digital camera, etc. as necessary to accomplish assigned work duties.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED OR an equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
  • Must pass job related tests.

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Michigan driver's license and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
  • Candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment physical, including a drug screen, as a condition of employment.
  • Will be subject to a background check and required to complete and pass job-related tests.
  • All candidates will undergo a phone interview; in-person interviews may be required at the discretion of management.
  • Employees may be required to work occasional evenings, nights, weekends or holidays and employees are subject to mandatory overtime at any time for emergency situations.
  • The employee must be able to change work locations within the County with little to no prior notice.

Work Conditions:

Job duties will require the physical ability to lift, carry, push and pull equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Mobility is required for walking over long distances and rough terrain on construction sites.

The work is performed outdoors in a construction environment in all types of weather and conditions.
