PeaceHealth is seeking a Mental Health Technician - Psychiatric Unit for a Part Time, 0.80 FTE, Evening position. The general salary range for this job opening at PeaceHealth is $21.90 – $32.50. The actual hiring rate is dependent upon several factors, including but not limited to, the job/position responsibilities, location, terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement, education, training, work experience, seniority, work performance, etc.

Hiring bonus may be available

This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement. There may be more than one opening on this posting.

Job Summary

Participates with the nursing care team in providing quality, compassionate patient care with an emphasis on the care of the psychiatric patient.

Essential Functions

  • Participate in the care, observation, and documentation of all psychiatric patients. This may include assisting with daily living activities; taking vital signs; collecting routine specimens; assisting with dressing; ambulating patients; setting up and assisting with procedures; may include attending and participating in group therapy.

  • Assisting nursing staff with seclusion and/or restraint. Observation of secluded or restrained patients.

  • If assigned to the Emergency Department may assist RN with receiving psychiatric patients by ambulance or law enforcement and triaging these patients. Also may assist with transporting patients.

  • Assist in keeping patient care areas and equipment clean.

  • May be responsible for maintaining unit supplies by stocking patient rooms and supply areas.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • Accredited Program Required: Acute Care Certified Nursing Assistant or EMT program if assigned to Emergency Department And

  • College Coursework Preferred: Psychology. or other health related field

Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year Preferred: Acute care facility or previous psychiatric experience and

  • Minimum of 1 year Required: Experience in an acute care psychiatric facility or equivalent recent experience caring for or managing individuals with behavioral health issues in a psychiatric setting, or 20 shifts or more floating to the inpatient psychiatric unit as a CNA

Credentials

  • Required: Certified Nurse Assistant 2 - Oregon Inpatient Psychiatric and Emergency Department Units. Emergency Department: EMT required in place of CNA or

  • Required within 90 Days: Crisis Intervention Certification Inpatient Psychiatric Unit and

  • Required Upon Hire: Basic Life Support

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply age specific principles of growth and development and life stages to meet each patient’s needs. (Required)

  • Demonstrated skill with psychiatric patients (Required)

  • Demonstrated competence with patient de-escalation, restraint and seclusion (Required)

Department / Location Specific Notes

Oregon West Network – Sacred Heart Medical Center: If working in either the Inpatient Psych Unit or the Emergency Department:

  • Graduate of a Certified Nursing Assistant Acute Care Program or EMT Program required.

  • Current CNA II certification or minimum of EMT-Basic certification required.

  • Complete CareConnect training to provide assistance designed for Patient Team Support.

  • RiverBend BHU – One-year Psychiatric Unit experience required. Two years Emergency Department experience preferred.

Oregon West Network – SHMC Inpatient Psychiatry Unit: additional Essential Functions

  • Being present with the patients in order to interact, observe, and report to the direct care or Charge Nurse patient and milieu status.

  • Responsible for laundering and tracking patient’s clothing as needed; reporting to Social Work patient items needed for discharge.

Working Conditions

Lifting

  • Patient handling no greater than 35 lbs. without the use of assistive equipment and/or devices (NIOSH).

  • Fine motor skills to be able to grasp and control medical equipment and perform precise procedures.

  • Push/Pull: Frequently up to 45 lbs. force (i.e., WOW, medical carts).

  • Perform hands on CPR at least 20 mins using 100-125 lbs. of force (National Assoc. of EMS Physicians and AHA) Frequency should be seldom or occasionally.

  • Ability to move around area with frequent sitting.

  • Bending/ stooping/ squatting/ reaching/ kneeling frequently.

  • Lifting (non-patient) up to 20 lbs. occasionally and 5 lbs. frequently.

Environmental Conditions

  • Exposure to biohazard, body fluids and airborne particles.

  • Must be able to complete tasks in a noisy environment.

Mental/Visual

  • Vision and hearing required within normal limits (glasses, contacts, hearing aids permitted).

  • Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.
