Position Purpose: Under general supervision and in collaboration with the director, provides leadership in the Emergency Department to ensure the quality of care and operational effectiveness of the designated shifts. Utilizes skills in assessing, planning, organizing, and evaluating the provision of patient care. Demonstrates system thinking, initiates improvement strategies, promotes employee development, and works collaboratively with physician partners. Adheres to the principles of Service Excellence Guiding Behaviors and the philosophy and mission of Mercy in all aspects of job performance.

What you will Do:

  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service/care appropriate to the age of the patients served, in accordance with Mercy standards.

  • Provides leadership in the development, implementation and

  • evaluation of unit/service goals and monitoring outcomes, in

  • order to accomplish strategic objectives and support the mission.

  • Promotes achievement of best practice in access, technology,

  • service and coordination of information between providers/services.

  • Makes decisions based on knowledge, experience and the ability to forecast using information management and relevant data.

  • Shows mastery of job content, demonstrates skill and knowledge of individual profession and area of responsibility. Keeps current with new trends and developments and seeks out continuous education for management skills.

  • Promotes practices to maintain an efficient and effective work force through staffing model development, recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation processes.

  • Collaborates and fosters positive professional relations with medical staff.

  • Recognizing patient needs and competencies of the staff, gives employees appropriately challenging assignments.

  • Defines and communicates employee performance expectations. Assesses staff competency and actively participates in the planning and implementation of staff development processes and activities.

  • Provides leadership and promotes staff involvement in continuous quality improvement activities. Conducts on-going quality management by identifying quality assurance issues and

  • coordinating action and follow-up. Identifies problems, opportunities, threats and trends early and reports findings to the Clinical Manager.

  • Ensures risk management principles and practices are implemented. Ensures staff adherence to standards and regulatory agency requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Is a Registered Nurse, maintaining a current Iowa license. B.S.N. required.

  • Requires a minimum of two to three years relevant work experience. One to two years of management experience preferred.

  • Must have ability to cope with frequent stress and is capable of successfully working through adversity.

  • Maintains certification in BCLS, ACLS, and PALS. Obtains TNCC within the first year if hire.

  • Certification within the specialty is preferred.

  • Establishes rapport easily and is approachable for counsel.
