Performs activities and functions of patient care within the legal scope of practice of the Licensed Practical Nurse, State of Iowa, and in accordance with Mercy Medical Center Policy and Procedure Manual. About the job:

Under limited supervision of a Registered Nurse, assists in carrying out the phases of the nursing process as appropriately delegated by the Registered Nurse. Performs activities and functions of patient care within the legal scope of practice of the Licensed Practical Nurse, State of Iowa, and in accordance with Mercy Medical Center Policy and Procedure Manual. What you will do:

  • Utilizing the nursing process, assists the registered nurse in providing patient care from a holistic approach, specific to the age of the patient population identified within the department/unit scope of service, and in accordance with the department/unit standards.

  • Demonstrates ability to anticipate/identify physical, psycho­logical, social and spiritual needs of the patient and appropriately reports to the Registered Nurse.

  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with registered nurses, certified nursing assistants and other multi-disci­plinary team members, as well as patient, families and significant others.

  • Implements and documents appropriate teaching needs to pa­tient/ family/significant others as delegated by the registered nurse.

  • Prioritizes and implements appropriate interventions and treatments as delegated by the registered nurse, utilizing the formulated plan of care.

  • Collaborates with the registered nurse to evaluate and document patient responses to the plan of care, medications, treatments and therapies (ongoing pa­tient assessments).

  • Identifies and communicates significant changes in pa­tient status (potential or actual adverse pa­tient occurrences) to the registered nurse.

  • Reports and records aspects of data collection/tasks performed into the patient record accurately and concisely.

  • Administers medications (excluding intravenous administration) safely utilizing acquired knowledge and skills according to the physician's order.

  • Intravenous Therapy- Procedures which may be assumed if delegated by the RN are as follows:

  • Adds unmixed bags to established IV lines

  • Regulate rate of non-medicated IV solutions

  • Discontinue IV therapy

  • Ensures that documentation accurately reflects supplies, equipment and services provided.

  • Performs aseptic and sterile treatments/procedures per registered nurse delegation and physician order, and in compliance with Mercy Medical Center’s policy and procedure.

  • Maintains knowledge and demonstrates competency in use of patient equipment.

What we are looking for:

  • Requires current Iowa LPN license.

  • Must successfully complete nursing service orientation and unit-based orientation.
