Description:

Under limited supervision, provides trauma-informed mental health counseling services for child victims of physical and sexual abuse and severe neglect and their families. Duties include child victim assessment, early stage diagnosis and development of individual treatment consistent with professional standards. Is responsible for active participation on multidisciplinary teams, high quality written and verbal reporting, and providing factual and expert witness testimony for the judicial system

What you will do:

  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service/care appropriate to the age of the patients served, in accordance with MercyOne standards.

  • Assesses and evaluates child victims, determines early stage diagnosis, develops short-term individual treatment plans, and provides interim or short term crisis counseling, play therapy, stabilization services, and transition (appropriate referral), and/or termination and follow up consistent with professional standards including timeliness and clinical documentation.

  • Researches and creates appropriate treatment plans for child victims and non-offending caregivers. Provides psychoeducation regarding client experiences to client and caregiver(s).

  • Plays an active role on the Multidisciplinary team.

  • Administers and assesses appropriate mental health assessment tools.

  • Provides monthly statistical information including the number of contacts/attendees and community contact.

  • Actively participates in department meetings, committees, conferences, and in-services.

  • Records and reports clinical documentation in a timely fashion and formatted in a professional manner. Provides and coordinates information to all invested parties.

  • Communicates effectively with people, internal and external to MercyOne. Addresses audiences at the local, state and regional level.

  • Is knowledgeable of continuous quality improvement methods and applies these methods to reporting documents and service planning consistent with the MercyOne’s strategic initiatives.

  • Is a clinical consultant to other agencies, including but not limited to law enforcement and the Department of Human Services, etc. for abuse victims and their families.

  • Demonstrates a flexible working schedule in meeting with children and families.

  • Identifies and reports potential/actual adverse patient occurrences (incidents) to the person in charge and/or other appropriate lines of authority. Makes accurate, objective documentation of occurrences according to hospital policy.

  • Demonstrates ability to remain composed and takes appropriate action in acute or emergency.

  • Is knowledgeable and actively participates in improving patient safety and reducing risk to patients. Complies with Safety and Infection Control Policy & Procedure.

What we are looking for:

  • Requires a Master's degree in mental health counseling, social work with therapy/mental health counseling specialty, psychology, or related field with appropriate licensure in the state of Iowa/or ability to becomes licensed in the state of Iowa in a reasonable amount of time and credentials as required from an accredited school.

  • Is a member of local and national mental health organizations, if applicable.

  • Certification in play therapy and/or creative arts therapies (art therapy, music therapy, expressive arts therapy, etc.) preferred.

  • Must have a minimum of two years experience working with child abuse victims and family members.

  • Must demonstrate ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with children and adults.

  • Must be able to work as a team member or to work independently.

  • Must possess high integrity and maintain confidentiality at all times.

  • Must be able to cope effectively with stressful situations and time constraints and demonstrate critical-thinking skills.

  • Is familiar with federal, state, regional, and community resources.

  • Requires excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

  • Must be able to perform a variety of duties characterized by frequent change, and requiring foresight and leadership skills.

  • May be requested to travel within the Siouxland region and at times to nationally for necessary trainings.
