Position Purpose

Under medical direction of a cardiovascular surgeon and supervision of the Supervisor, provides care to patients during the intra-operative phase of surgical intervention. Is responsible for preparing the operating room for the surgical procedure including instruments, equipment, and supplies. Maintains the sterile field during the surgical procedure. Maintains expert status for all open-heart, thoracic, endovascular, major and minor vascular, and general procedures. Takes call for this specialty as well as serves as a preceptor. Focuses on complex activities such as special procedures, quality control and/or staff instruction requiring an advanced level of training and experience.

What you will Do

  • Sets up instrumentation and needed supplies for open procedures using sterile technique and prepares equipment appropriate for procedure. Performs surgical scrub duties such as first handling or assisting physician throughout the procedure.

  • Sets up and maintains instrumentation, needed supplies, and assists with preparation of needed endovascular equipment during the endovascular procedure.

  • Assumes responsibility of maintaining the OR room in a patient ready state, including cleaning and stocking of supplies/equipment.

  • Applies knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative technique relative to open-heart and vascular procedures.

  • Provides effective and appropriate communication with physicians to obtain efficient, cost effective quality care. Demonstrates ability to anticipate the surgeon’s needs in procedures.

  • Assists with position, prepping, and draping of the patient. Assists with appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging. Follows the count policy appropriately.

  • Assists with handling tissue as directed and supervised by the surgeon during the operative procedure

  • Maintains instruments/tray setups utilized in surgical procedures in the CV OR.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of an OR technology course and current certification as a Surgical Technologist required.

  • Must have a minimum of one to two years previous surgical experience, cardiovascular experience preferred.

  • BCLS certification required.

  • Demonstrates clinical competence and serves as a role model in clinical practice.

  • Is able to communicate effectively with all members of the health care team.

  • Is able to perform a variety of duties characterized by frequent change.
