Ellis Medicine LPN II -Outpatient Mental Health Clinic in Schenectady, New York

BASIC FUNCTION:

The Licensed Practical Nurse II under the general supervision of a registered professional nurse, provides care for patients and families of any age regardless of gender. Through the provision of basic patient care, the LPN II participates in the restorative, health maintenance and wellness plan defined by a multidisciplinary team.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Graduation from an accredited LPN Program. Current licensure in New York State or eligibility for limited permit to practice. Documentation of successful completion of pharmacology course required, either through basic program or other approved coursework. Current BLS required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The position is located indoors under normal working conditions. Should be able to push/pull, lift/move 35 lb., be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing, and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers. Mobility requirements may include the ability to sit at a computer terminal or workstation for a prolonged period in addition to being able to squat, stand and walk for a reasonable length of time and distance. Sensory requirements include the ability to articulate and comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to read the English language.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate in the assessment process by collecting information and reporting to the Registered Nurse.

  • Assist the Registered Nurse in the formulation of the meaningful plan of care.

  • Provide information on patient progress to RN to have input into plan of care revision.

  • Monitor patient nutrition and fluid balance.

  • Provides emotional support to the patient and family.

  • Proficient in the use of the Hospital information system.

  • Administers medication within the confines of the Nurse Practice Act, does not administer any medication (except saline flushes) by direct IV push technique or administer an IV bolus for plasma volume expansion.

  • Administers mini bags/bottles/ intermittent IV’s and IV solutions with medication only after the first dose has been administered by a RN the first dose being defined as a new solution, new medication, or changes in dosage of a medication. Observes for signs and symptoms of expected action, side effects and toxic effects of medication and reports to the RN.

  • Documents medications and IV administration according to policy.

  • Notifies the RN of orders for any medication, which Licensed Practical Nurses are not permitted to administer.

  • Monitors patient safety as outlined in PCP and hospital policy.

    Salary Range: $21.22-30.77 Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
