Plastic Express Drayage Dispatcher in Savannah, Georgia

Job Summary:

Reports operationally to the Drayage Manager, and administratively coordinates with the Plastic Express EHS Director. Drayage Dispatcher functions are to plan, schedule, oversee and regulate the day-to-day drayage operations at the facility.  The Drayage Dispatcher shall abide by the operational systems and procedures, while employing the proper limitations and controls, to ensure the safest, most effective, efficient and profitable utilization of equipment and manpower under his or her control and direction. The Drayage Dispatcher shall ensure compliance with Plastic Express and D.O.T. policies and procedures, while maintaining excellent customer service.

 

Essential Functions/Duties:

  • Personnel:

  • Review the selection, and supervise the training and indoctrination of required manpower.

  • Conduct performance evaluations; where applicable establish measurable goals and complete goal review in a timely fashion.

  • Continually strive to develop a positive team environment.

  • Communicate and provide constructive feedback as required.

  • Equipment & Facility:

  • Monitor and make recommendations to the Drayage Manager regarding the acquisition, disposition and transfer of tractors, trailers, and ancillary equipment.

  • Maintain the schedule for, and supervise the dispatch of, drayage drivers.

  • Ensure the proper maintenance, recordkeeping and presentation of drayage equipment.

  • Safety, Health, Environmental & Security:

  • Administer, as they apply to operations within the Division, Plastic Express policies and procedures.

  • Review and maintain timeliness of the licensing of all operating equipment.

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state and federal laws.

  • Coordinate with the EHS Director to foster and maintain a strong safety culture, to include mandatory quarterly safety meetings.

  • Culture and develop an environment that adheres to the company’s Safety, Health, Environmental, and Security policies.

  • Customers and Business Environment/Community:

  • Maintain clear and adequate liaison and communications with customers.

  • Interface with Customer Success Representatives and sales personnel.

  • Keep informed of competitors’ activities and current industry practices and developments.

  • Conduct appropriate relationships with industry and trade associations and the community in the best interests of Plastic Express.

  • Drivers

  • Directly responsible for company drivers, to involve recommendations for hiring, training, and disciplinary action.

  • Provide input for annual evaluations on subordinates and drivers.

  • Maintain employee files for company drivers.

  • Responsible to ensure that drivers’ wages are accurately calculated and equitably allocated.

  • Perform the duties of a driver from time to time as required.

  • Dispatch

  • Dispatch drivers, tractors, and trailers to ensure that the schedule is administered correctly.  This includes auditing drivers’ logs and checking them against supporting documentation such as fuel receipts, time stamped scale tickets, and bills of lading.

  • Interface with customers and resolve any concerns that may arise.

  • Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure company drivers are in compliance with DOT and FMCSA regulations.

  • Maintain complete driver files to include: safety meetings, drug testing, and discipline for any violations of company policies or law.

  • Audit HOS logs.

  • Conduct at least quarterly safety meetings with all of the drivers.

  • Drug and Alcohol Program

  • Administer the Plastic Express drug and alcohol program at the appropriate level.

  • Ensure that all new hires are signed up for and receive new hire and routine random drug and alcohol testing.

  • Maintenance

  • Responsible for overseeing completion of maintenance in accordance with applicable laws and company policy.

  • Ensure all inspections and regular services are performed on a timely basis.

  • Ensure that all outside maintenance is being performed correctly.

  • Ensure tractors and trailers are kept clean and in accordance within company image.

  • Container Inventories

  • Supervise container inventory and ensure accuracy.

  • Assume responsibility as liaison between Plastic Express and the equipment providers.

  • Ensure containers are turned-in prior to expiration of allotted free time.

  • Ensure all containers are delivered to port prior to cutoff.

    Qualifications: 

    Required Education and Experience

  • Minimum of two years of related experience and/or training – direct experience in like field will be considered in lieu of formal accredited education

    Preferred Education and Experience 

  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • Prior supervisory experience, office experience, experience in coordinating with outside carriers, knowledge of container terminal operations, transportation rate negotiations and experience working with shipping lines, railroads, and other intermodal carriers

    Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The job requires long periods of standing while teaching a class.

  • Must be able to perform physical labor such as, routinely lifting up to 55 lbs., moving up to 250 pounds with proper tool(s), climbing ladders, operate control panels and working with hand tools.

  • Must possess adequate vision to include close visual confirmation of finely printed documents and have distance vision to safely and correctly identify objects and or markings. Must have peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus on subjects or objects at any safe working distance. 

    Licenses/Certificates:  

  • Ideal candidate will possess and be able to maintain a current Commercial Driver License (CDL)

    Skills:   

  • Demonstrable, significant knowledge of the transportation and logistics industries

  • Excellent communication and managerial skills

  • Proven interpersonal skills; relationship development and management

  • Ability to work independently and as part of team

  • Ability to recognize onsite risk factors and take appropriate action with firmness and tact

  • Must be multi-task oriented with the ability to handle many activities simultaneously. 

    Work Environment:

    This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and printers/scanners. May be required to also conduct warehouse walk-throughs to validate inventory of material. May also be required to work in terminal yard to validate available trailers.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

    This is a full-time position. Typical office hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Must be on available for guidance at any time while Terminal deliveries are taking place.

    Travel: 

    Little to no travel is expected for this position.
