About the Position

In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Develop and implement standards of service that ensure the prompt and efficient resolution of each inquiry, delivered with the utmost respect and courtesy.

  • Promote understanding and use of the library, its technology, and resources by presenting individual and group training programs.

  • Assist customers by locating answers to questions, including Interlibrary Loan services and referrals to agencies outside the library.

  • Keep abreast of developments, new trends, and innovations in libraries.

  • Aid at service desks and to other sections as needed.

  • Represent Sarasota County and the library/library interests to library users and within the community.

  • Prepare reviews, press releases, bibliographies, and other promotional displays.

  • Analyze and identify service population needs, developing and directing plans to meet those needs.

  • Network with other agencies to provide and obtain materials and services.

  • Participate in setting unit, library, and system goals, contributing to decision making and the evaluation of progress.

Work Hours:

A typical schedule will be 40 hours/week, scheduled within the operating hours below. ( Occasional programs or outreach events may take place outside of normal operating hours.)

  • Monday, Wednesday: 8:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

  • Tuesday, Thursday: 8:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

  • Friday and Saturday: 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

  • Currently closed on Sundays (subject to change).

About You

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS) from a college/university accredited by the American Library Association.

  • -OR- Bachelor's Degree and enrolled in an MLS/MLIS program with the ability to obtain an MLS/MLIS within twelve (12) months from date of hire.

  • Valid Florida Driver's License by date of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior work experience in a reference, programming, or technology related position in a public library.

  • Spanish language skills.

Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.
