Overview:

Universal Engineering Sciences (UES) has an opening in our Construction Services Department. UES is a nationwide leader in Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Materials Testing and Inspection, Building Code Compliance, Environmental, Occupational Health & Safety, and Building Envelope.

Summary:

This Lab Technician is a key role, responsible for the day-to-day completion of work assignments related to testing concrete, soils, asphalt, and other construction materials. The ideal candidate is a reliable, trustworthy individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment where collaboration and autonomy are valued.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures that all testing equipment used is functioning properly, maintained as required by company and/or manufacturer's policy and that all calibrated equipment is within its calibration cycle

  • Ensures that project testing requirements are met and compliant with project specifications, requirements, and company policies or procedures

  • Conducts testing of soils, concrete, asphalt, and other construction materials in accordance with applicable testing standards/methods (ASTM, AASHTO, FM, Army Corp of Engineers, DOT, etc.)

  • Reports data in a complete, timely, and understandable fashion

  • Completes daily time and labor reports in accordance with company policy

  • Turns in paperwork related to the work order every day

  • Attends all technician meetings

  • Regular attendance is required

  • Must be flexible to changing schedules and hours to support business needs. Overnight and weekend schedules may be necessary to support business needs

  • Follows all company safety procedures and policies

  • Other duties may be assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record (in accordance with our Driver’s License and Motor Vehicle Record Check Criteria)

  • Ability to pass a background check screening in accordance with Florida’s Jessica Lunsford Act (or equivalent state classification)

  • Ability to earn required testing certifications

  • Ability to read & write, including interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, as well as the ability to write routine reports and correspondence and speak effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and customers/client

  • Computer skills sufficient to operate a laptop, including sending and receiving emails, and the ability to learn Field Data Collection (FDC)/Inspector Gadget to input data and prepare reports

  • Mathematical skills sufficient to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals

  • Reasoning ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram form

Preferred Qualifications:

  • LBR Certification for Soils Work

  • Concrete Cylinder Testing Technician Certification for Concrete Work

  • Asphalt Plant Technician Certification for Asphalt Work

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Required to drive, stand, walk, use hands to type, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, talk, and hear; body motions and movements include bending, twisting, reaching, stooping, pulling, kneeling, lifting, carrying, and pushing, with or without reasonable accommodation

  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 35lbs and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75lbs, with or without reasonable accommodation

  • The testing process for the various construction materials (i.e., soils, concrete, asphalt, etc.) is repetitive in nature several times per hour

  • The technician’s primary duty is to test soil compaction and test the compressive strength of concrete samples, as well as testing other construction materials; testing these samples requires extensive manual lifting and handling. The manual lifting is performed individually, and the weights manually lifted range from a 0-75+lbs, with or without reasonable accommodation

  • Weights in the 0-75-lbs range are lifted frequently (From 33% up to 66% of the task period) with a frequency range 10–35 repetitions per hour, with or without reasonable accommodation

  • Weights in the range of 35lbs –75+lbs (concrete cylinders and soils) are lifted frequently (From 15% to 30% of the task period) with a range of 5-15 repetitions per hour, with or without reasonable accommodation

  • Construction materials are manually lifted and carried distances on average ranging from a few feet to 75 feet, but may occasionally exceed 75 ft in walking distance and are unloaded manually at our lab and carried inside for testing, with or without reasonable accommodation

  • On average the workdays range from 7-12 hours

  • Job site conditions may or may not be accessible by vehicle, including wetlands, swamps, grasslands, and fields with uneven surfaces, sand, brush, and other natural and man-made obstacles

  • The testing work is performed inside and outside the lab with exposure to: dirt, dust, sun, heat, and humidity

  • The testing work is performed outside on the field with exposure to: dirt, dust, sun, heat, and humidity

  • This job is primarily and regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and construction sites where the noise level is usually moderate to loud

  • The testing process for the various construction materials (i.e. soils, concrete, asphalt, etc.) is repeated several times per hour
