Sarasota County Government Housing Inspector- Resilient SRQ Housing Program in Sarasota, Florida

Sarasota County Government is seeking a Housing Inspector to assist with the Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) or “Resilient SRQ,” a federally funded program assisting the unmet needs of the County following Hurricane Ian. The Housing Inspector will support the Housing Recovery Program and monitor and ensure quality control for all single-family housing construction projects. This is a unique opportunity for an individual who wants to make an impact in the community by assisting Sarasota County residents in recovering and repairing their homes following the impacts of Hurricane Ian. This grant-funded position will last approximately five years.

Housing Inspection

  • Conduct thorough inspections of residential properties to identify any issues or potential problems.

  • Stay up to date on industry regulations and best practices.

  • Ensure that all inspections are conducted in a safe and professional manner.

  • Review and validate damage assessments, estimated cost of repair, and/or damage repair verification reports.

  • Conduct periodic on-site observation of work during construction to monitor compliance with plans.

  • Confer with case managers or contractors to resolve construction problems.

  • Inspect work in progress to ensure that workmanship conforms to specifications and adherence to construction schedules.

Reporting and compliance

  • Document findings and prepare detailed reports.

  • Communicate with case managers to explain inspection results and answer any questions.

  • Notify contractors of discrepancies found during inspections and ensure compliance.

  • Prepare inspection reports indicating discrepancies and evidence of noncompliance and determining stages of construction progress for the Project Manager's review and approval.

Process Improvement

  • Identify potential roadblocks and assist with resolving issues causing delays in the timely completion of the construction project.

  • Evaluate issues and work with the Case Managers to develop proposed solutions.

  • Understand and interpret CDBG-DR grant functions, regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Engage with department staff, contractors, community partners, and program applicants.

    E-Work/Hybrid Work: Currently this position is eligible to e-work up to 2 days per week! After you complete your first six months, contingent on work requirements and other factors, you’ll be eligible for this fantastic benefit.

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

About You

To thrive in this position, you must have-

  • An Associate degree AND three (3) years job-related experience; 1 to 2 years of experience with Housing programs or Disaster Recovery programs is preferred.

  • -OR- BS or BA degree from an accredited college or university in job-related field; one year job related experience preferred.

  • Five (5) years professional related experience can be substituted for the degree at management discretion.

  • HQS Certification or the ability to obtain the certification within 45 days of employment.

Starting Pay Range : $25.45 - $28.00 based on experience
