Job Summary

We are currently seeking qualified applicants for a Senior Human Health Risk Assessor position. This is a position located in Columbus, Ohio although alternate locations can be considered as well as remote.

Knowledge and experience of regulatory human health risk assessment (HHRA) frameworks including USEPA Risk Assessment Guidance for Superfund necessary for developing technical approaches for site investigations, designing field sampling programs supporting risk assessments, identifying human health exposure pathways, evaluating chemical data and toxicity, and characterizing risk to human health is required. Must possess solid technical and communication skills and be capable of designing, writing, and coordinating reports on projects of all sizes. This position may require travel to project sites.

The Environment Solutions Division within the Environment and Agriculture Business Line conducts research, characterization, and remediation of environmental contamination, designs and implements environmentally sustainable remedial technologies, and provides strategic risk management consulting services.

As a Senior Human Health Risk Assessor (C4134E), you must have knowledge and experience performing HHRA following the USEPA framework covering the range of environmental media, including groundwater, surface water, soil, sediment, and indoor air (vapor intrusion). You must also understand federal and state environmental regulations as they relate to risk assessment and risk management decision making. You will be an integral part of our team focused on providing solutions to clients’ site characterization and remediation challenges as well as product stewardship and compliance. You will work in cross-disciplinary project teams which may include multiple engineering and science disciplines, depending on the project scope. Your coworkers will range from new graduates to those with 30+years of experience. Responsibilities

  • Leads the development of HHRAs in accordance with federal and state guidance, including the use of the Johnson and Ettinger (J&E) model for vapor intrusion and the EPA Vapor Intrusion Screening Levels (VISL) Calculator.

  • Provides technical leadership and oversight support in environmental consulting or regulatory environment with a focus on site investigation/remediation, applied toxicology, and/or human health risk assessment.

  • Provides technical leadership and guidance in development of Data Quality Objectives (DQOs) and sampling design; cleanup levels/project action limits/Regional Screening Levels; exposure assumptions; and Remedial Action Objectives.

  • Reviews and interprets environmental and toxicological data sets, studies, and reports.

  • Supports remedial strategy development for contaminated sites, including evaluating environmental sensitivities, mitigation/restoration techniques for remedial actions, and changes in exposure pathways and exposure parameters.

  • Assists in the development of sampling and analysis plans for various media, including soil, groundwater, sediment, vapor intrusion, and surface water.

  • Prepares written documents such as letters, memoranda, proposals, work plans and investigative reports.

  • Supports business development, including bringing in new clients and obtaining repeat business from existing clients, leading proposal preparation, and developing and implementing a business development plan.

  • Builds effective working relationships with internal and external clients, manages client meetings, and maintains successful business development efforts with key clients to identify, cultivate, and capture major business opportunities.

  • Identifies, plans, and leads internal research and development projects focused on growing Battelle’s technical capabilities and new business.

  • Participates in scientific conferences (e.g., session chair, platform presentations), peer review panels, and increases company visibility through publications.

Successful Candidates Will Demonstrate

  • Experience managing tasks that are part of large projects/programs in the environmental remediation industry with DoD, USEPA, state and/or commercial clients.

  • Knowledge of the state of the science related to toxicology studies and risk assessment approaches for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and other emerging contaminants.

  • Preparation of technical documents.

  • Possess strong understanding of CERCLA Five-Year Review document format and requirements relating to HHRA and Remedial Action Objectives; make recommendations for Protectiveness Statements.

  • Ingenuity, creativity, and resourcefulness, including the development and application of innovative technical principles and concepts to solve current and future problems in the environmental remediation industry, including emerging contaminants.

  • Technical thought leadership and ability to identify and resolve problems associated with the development and implementation of complex laboratory, remedial design, and/or field projects and programs.

  • Proven ability to both work independently and lead tasks with minimal oversight.

  • Positive attitude and eagerness to take on new and technically challenging tasks.

  • Ability to provide technical expertise and mentoring to staff in risk assessment practice.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with 8 years of related experience, Master’s degree with 5 years of experience and/or a PhD degree with 2 years of experience with a specialization in environmental science, toxicology, biology, or related field.

  • 10+ years of progressive HHRA services experience and client support.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to succeed at a consulting pace, handling multiple project assignments, and maintaining flexibility, while meeting strict deadlines.

  • Some travel throughout the United States will be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with HHRA policy and guidance documents specific to the Navy and key states with industry-leading HHRA/guidance (i.e., CA-specifically, DTSC/HERO).

  • Proficiency in statistics as it relates to HHRA data evaluation.

  • Knowledge and/or experience with USEPA Environmental life-cycle assessment (LCA) program (provides a framework, approach, and methods for identifying and evaluating environmental burdens associated with the life cycles of materials and services, from cradle-to-grave) preferred.

  • Knowledge and/or experience with USEPA Design for Environment Alternatives Assessment preferred.
