Job Summary
The TRIO Upward Bound Program at the University of Utah is seeking talented, experienced Tutor to assist in delivery of tutoring program to high school students between grades 9 and 12. The TRIO Upward Bound Program helps both struggling and gifted students reach their full potential by supplementing the instruction they receive in class, and guiding them toward study practices and aides that can help them excel. Tutors work with individual students one-on-one, and occasionally organize group activities for students who are studying the same material. The TRIO Upward Bound team offers compassionate, motivating assistance to students, and tutors are expected to do the same. This position is for spring semester with the potential to extend into summer.
Program Overview
The TRIO Upward Bound (UB) Program at the University of Utah is an educational outreach program for first generation, and low-income high school students and is intended to assist with high school completion and entrance into post-secondary education. The UB Program serves students enrolled at East, West, Highland, and Kearns High Schools and provides academic advising, tutoring, exam preparation assistance, financial aid assistance, career exploration, and an intrusive and comprehensive summer College Success Academy. This program is funded by the US Department of Education, Office of Post-secondary Education.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities
Meet students at their high school and on campus to review homework assignments in the applicable subject area
Review recent homework assignments and test scores, then work through problems or questions that the student did not answer correctly
Attend monthly field trips with students and TRIO staff
Work with academic advisors to assist students with meeting academic goals
Employ proven study aides to prepare for upcoming tests and quizzes
Take notes during tutoring sessions to provide adequate follow up with students
Assist with management of classroom space at high schools
Communicate with parents/guardians about trouble areas or any other issue that requires attention
Promote a supportive environment for all participants and serve as a positive role model and representative of the TRIO office
Minimum Qualifications

Preferences
Preference given to those with previous TRIO experience.
Be a current University of Utah student
Must have completed a minimum of two years of college, and have a minimum 3.0 GPA
Must be a responsible individual with good interpersonal skills who enjoys working with students from diverse economic, social, and cultural backgrounds
Be willing to commit 15 hours per week (Includes some Saturday mornings)
Have reliable transportation and be willing to transport students in University vehicles if necessary
Take and pass state driving exam
Ability to pass background check
Ability to develop positive rapport with students
Tutor must attend:
o TRIO Student Leader Training (one week prior to the first week of the fall semester)
