Job Summary
The Division of Pediatric Rheumatology at the University of Utah School of Medicine has an immediate opening for a clinical nurse. The team consists of 9physicians, 3 advanced practice clinicians, 2 clinical nurse coordinators, 1 triage medical assistant, and 4 research staff. As part of the patient care team, this position is responsible for providing optimal patient care through effective clinical practice; educating the patient, patients’ family, and others; consulting with healthcare providers; and maintaining and continually updating knowledge regarding rheumatic diseases.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
Performs phone management with patients’ parents, chart review, care coordination, triage, and problem management.
Discusses patient and family concerns over the phone and/or via the EMR .
Formulates care plans for specific patients and documents the nursing process in the patients’ record.
Evaluates patient response to interventions and modifies plan of care as needed to achieve health care goals. Communicates adjustments or changes in treatment plan to patient/family.
Well versed in various co-pay assistance and free-drug programs.
Initiates patient care meetings with the health care team to revise the plan of care as the patient’s condition warrants.
Communicates lab and other test results to families.
Provides medication refills.
Assists providers and staff with patient-related paperwork such as school forms, DMV forms, and medication.
Maintains a safe and therapeutic patient care environment.
Works closely with triage team to provide high quality, efficient care to patients and their families.
Keeps current on advances in nursing care by participating in educational programs.
Orients and educates new staff in nursing techniques and division procedures.
Provides and oversees direct patient care in accordance with established nursing protocol and provider orders.
Utilizes knowledge of medications, procedures, infection control, and safety precaution, and initiates appropriate interventions in crisis situations.
Participates in quality improvement projects to positively affect patient and system outcomes to improve care.
Chronic illness care coordination.
Help transition families from inpatient to outpatient care.
Help with education for families.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual.

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.
This position involves intensive work that may exert up to 100 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects, such as medical equipment, or patients while providing medical care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners and behavioral health patients.

Minimum Qualifications
Required
Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire under the interstate compact if switching residency to State of Utah. Must maintain current Interstate Compact (multi-state) license if residency is not being changed to Utah.
Preferred
Some positions may require additional certifications such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support ( ACLS ), Pediatric Advanced Life Support ( PALS ), or Neonatal Resuscitation Program ( NRP ) within one year of hire.
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
