Job Description:

The Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist performs a variety of laboratory tests of varying complexity to be utilized in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Caregivers in this role will gain valuable experience and knowledge to help prepare them for workplace and career advancement.

As a free-standing children's hospital, we provide more than 60 medical and surgical pediatric specialties. We have more than 800 pediatric providers, supported by a staff of more than 3,000 - all specializing in pediatrics. We also provide outpatient care at clinics in four states.​

Our hospital is the only Level I Pediatric Trauma center serving a five-state region. Originally certified in 2002, we have been a pediatric trauma center for 15 consecutive years. We have one of the busiest trauma programs in the country. Our hospital has a 32-bed PICU, 16-bed CICU, 28-bed Neuro Trauma Unit, and 50-bed Level IV NICU. We have a dedicated pediatric and neonatal team that transports more than 1,500 patients each year.

Scope:

The Registered Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist performs testing in various departments of the clinical lab, such as Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Transfusion, and more. These scientists act as a technical expert to clinical staff, co-workers, and other departments. They are critical to patient diagnosis and care, ensuring accurate results through quality control, proficiency testing, calibrations, record review, instrument maintenance, and results/analyzer troubleshooting.

Intermountain caregivers in this role will have opportunities for growth, taking on additional responsibilities such as:

  • Key operator

  • QC review

  • Training and mentoring new staff

  • Assisting with evaluation and validation of new equipment

  • Technical writing

  • Compliance readiness (CAP, CLIA, etc.)

  • Acting as interim Team Lead

This position requires organizational skills as well as the ability to navigate many technical processes with a high level of detail. These caregivers work well as a member of a team and maintain a clean and safe work environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory/medical technology science. Education must be obtained through an accredited institution. Degree will be verified. - OR - Completion of course work and internship requirements in a qualified MLS program and eligibility to sit for the BOC. Certification must be completed and documented within 6 months of hire to remain in the registered MLS role.

  • Medical Technologist / Medical Lab Scientist certification or equivalent certification as approved by Manager and Human Resources. Certification must be maintained to remain in job.

  • Flexibility to work a variety of shifts that may include weekends, holidays, nights and on-call.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with laboratory information systems.

  • Experience in relevant areas of the clinical laboratory.

  • Demonstrated ability to use laboratory systems, databases, and spreadsheets.

  • Demonstrated effective communication skills using email, telephone, and in person.

  • Operate computers and complex and delicate lab equipment requiring the ability to move fingers and hands.

  • See and read lab equipment, monitors, and documents.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.
