Job Summary

The Lighting Supervisor reports to the Production Manager and works in tandem with the full-time Technical Director and Head Audio Engineer to plan and execute events and maintain all systems in a busy, historic theatrical venue. This role is hands-on and oversees all lighting needs including lighting programming, drafting lighting plots, distribution tie-in, systems operation and maintenance as well as assisting in projections and video needs. This position will supervise part time crew and frequently collaborates with community and touring organizations, ensuring event success.

Kingsbury Hall is a 1900-seat proscenium theatre in the heart of University of Utah that hosts a wide spectrum of events including the UtahPresents Series, campus events, student performances, as well as numerous rental events for community groups and national promoters. Genres include music, theater, dance, comedy, film screenings, lectures, conferences, graduations, and more. Support may extend to other UtahPresents presentations in other venues, several times a year.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Serve as master electrician and/or light designer for events: loading in, running, and loading out the show.

  • Advance lighting needs for shows coming into UtahPresents venues.

  • Programs and runs light board for rehearsals/events.

  • Inspect, maintain, and inventory lighting/stage equipment.

  • Maintains up to date house lighting plots, inventories, and all related paperwork.

  • Advances and creates event-specific lighting plots with visiting groups to aid in transition from show-to-show and event execution.

  • Make recommendations for new equipment and procedures.

  • Supervise part-time and overhire/student crews during hang, focus, and set up of lighting, training them in best practices.

  • Work a variable schedule, including nights, weekends and holidays.

  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

  • Excellent follow-through and the ability to work unsupervised.

  • A steady energy level and calm demeanor; ability to navigate challenges with creativity, flexibility, patience, tenacity, and empathy.

  • A team-based approach to the work environment.

  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to draft and interpret technical drawings, stage plots, technical riders, and other applicable production documentation. Particularly AutoCAD and Vectorworks, and Lightwright.

  • Proficient in counterweight and chain motor rigging practices. ETCP certification a plus.

  • Proficient understanding of electrical loads, dimmer racks and basic electrical theory to ensure safe operation of house and visiting systems.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with common stage electrics and lighting equipment:

  • ETC , High End, ChamSys, etc. consoles

  • Stage lighting fixtures, both conventional/intelligent, and cabling

  • Vectorworks and Lightwright

  • Demonstrated familiarity with live events software such as QLab.

  • Networking (ETCNet, SACN , Art-Net Dante, etc.) experience a plus.

  • Projection mapping experience a plus.

  • Proficiency in basic office computer systems including Mac OS , Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Teams, Slack, ZOOM productions, cloud-based storage systems, etc.

  • Able to withstand long hours of concentrated physical activity, including reaching overhead and lifting 75+ pounds.

  • Able to climb ladders and work at heights over 20 feet.

  • Able to move heavy equipment and work with a variety of power tools and electronic systems

  • Physical limitations cannot totally hinder the ability to perform tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus one year directly related experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Demonstrated ability to work independently, analyze and make decisions related to program content. Strong coordination and organizational skills required to prioritize conflicting deadlines. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.
