and

Executive Director, University of Utah Center on Aging

The University of Utah seeks a geriatrician leader to serve as the Chief for the Geriatrics Division in the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine’s Department of Internal Medicine and Director of its Center on Aging. This is a remarkable opportunity for a dynamic academic leader to further the growth, innovation, and diversity of this vibrant program’s research, clinical, educational, and other programmatic missions.

The Geriatrics Division’s mission is to improve the health, independence and quality of life for older adults. As an Age-Friendly Health System – Committed to Care Excellence, our goal is to ensure that every University of Utah Health patient receives care that addresses each of the geriatric 4MS – What Matters, Mobility, Medications, and Mentation. The Division benefits from a seamless relationship with the VA Salt Lake City Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center ( GRECC ). The Division includes 29 faculty members – 21 physicians and eight PhD research faculty – two Advance Practice Clinicians, and 50 administrative and research staff. Its FY23 operating budget totals $6.3 million dollars.

University of Utah Health has ranked in the top 10 of the prestigious Vizient Quality Leadership Award for the last 13 years. The University of Utah is also a Top-Tier 1 research university and a member of the Association of American Universities. Its research funding was $686 million in FY22. Its research community is highly collaborative across 18 colleges, 35 interdisciplinary programs, and 100 academic departments and divisions.

Research activities in the Geriatrics Division are supported by $7 million dollars of annual extramural research funding and through the GRECC . Dr. Randal Rupper was appointed the GRECC Director in 2022. The GRECC is funded with an annual recurring budget of approximately $1.6 M. Its well-established research programs include the Utah Vascular Research Lab and the Translational Vascular Physiology Lab. Building from this solid research foundation, applicants can expect resources needed to further expand research in the Geriatrics Division.

Clinical activities include a geriatrics patient-centered medical home clinic with specialty clinical programs including Aging Brain Care and Fall Evaluation programs, medical directorship of the Utah State Veterans home, and both inpatient geriatrics consultation and a Hospital Elder Life Program ( HELP ). Twenty-four clinicians provide outpatient services and inpatient consultations at five locations in the Salt Lake Valley.

Educational activities include a medical student fourth-year clerkship, a required rotation for the internal medicine residency program, an ACGME -accredited clinical fellowship with three fellows appointed each year, a NHLBI -funded T32 training grant, and a VA GRECC Advanced Geriatric Fellowship track. In addition, many Division faculty support the Utah Geriatric Education Center ( UGEC ), a HRSA -funded Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program.
