Job Description

SHIFT DETAILS Our Community Programs Presenter team works varied hours, including afternoons/evenings and occasional weekday mornings and weekends as needed.*

JOB SUMMARY:

The Community Programs Presenter provides educational programming to members of the community in local library branches, Clark Planetarium events, and other community functions. Instruction provided by the Community Programs Presenter involves development and in-person delivery of STEAM curricula including lesson plans, hands-on interactive activities, and live science demonstrations. In-person delivery occurs primarily in a classroom setting or at indoor and outdoor events and festivals.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Present science lesson plans, hands-on interactive activities, and live science demonstrations to a variety of audiences

  • Provide inspiring, engaging, and educational experiences for community members of all ages and backgrounds

  • Accurately gather, record, and submit required information for each visit to be used for internal and state

  • Actively review the calendar of outreach visits several weeks in advance of each visit in coordination with other staff members

  • Communicate as needed with external contacts prior to programs/events to verify and finalize any necessary details (e.g., coordinating setup of equipment, verifying time and date)

  • Travel to outreach locations along the Wasatch Front in one of Clark Planetarium’s vans (most visits will be within a 1-hour drive)

  • Operate telescopes at star and solar viewing parties

  • Manage time and travel to arrive punctually to work and outreach locations

  • Create curriculum and write lesson plans

  • Follow safety guidelines

  • Other duties as Examples include but are not limited to: teaching summer camp sessions, participating in school “science nights”

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must pass a Utah Criminal Record background check

  • Highly dependable, punctual, and accountable

  • Engaging and enthusiastic personality

  • Ability to describe and convey science principles and concepts to a wide range of ages and backgrounds

  • Able to work independently and adapt to situations

  • Ability to navigate and use various social media platforms

  • Must successfully complete online driver’s safety program (4 hours online) and other Salt Lake County trainings

  • Valid Utah driver’s license and good driving record

  • Able to perform physical duties including:

  • Must be able to lift 50

  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time

  • Must be comfortable using educational and scientific equipment including but not limited to: liquid nitrogen, flammable gases, compressed air, etc.

  • Must be able to occasionally work outside in all weather conditions

Additional Information

TEMPORARY POSITIONS:

An "At Will", FLSA non-exempt employee who is not eligible for County benefits and who must work an average of 29 hours or less per week or an average of 129 hours or less per month.

  • Must work an average of 29 hours or less per week or an average of 129 hours or less per month.

  • Are not eligible for County benefits except as otherwise provided for by policy.

  • Are not considered merit employees.

  • Are "at will" employees who may be terminated for any reason, without notice, and without a pre-termination hearing.
