*JOB SUMMARY *

Performs observation patrols for zoning violations within the MSD jurisdictions to initiate and ensure actions are taken to achieve compliance.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

Entry level, part-time (up to 29 hours) position. Experience in code enforcement, zoning enforcement, building inspection, environmental health inspection, and or Municipal Services in zoning and planning is preferred.

Special Requirements

• Must be at least 17 and have possessed a valid and unencumbered Utah driver license for at least 12 months. 

• Due to the nature of this position, the final candidate must successfully pass a pre-employment background check.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties and responsibilities are intended to be representative of the work performed by the incumbent(s) in this position and are not all-inclusive. • Inspects for compliance following notice and prior to legal action by applying knowledge of ordinance requirements and field inspection practices.  

• Notifies property owners and/or occupants of ordinance violations in writing, noting ordinance violations and possible alternatives for correction using communicative skills, experience, professional judgement, and effective public relations.

• Identifies and initiates any special inspection requirements, ensuring compliance and overseeing follow-up procedures.

• Determines the appropriate course of action needed to resolve violations and achieve compliance with the Landscaping Standards ordinance.

• Assists legal counsel in prosecution of cases involving violations of zoning ordinances and/or commission requirements for which the department is responsible; testifies in court if required. 

• Officiates vegetation abatements, directing the work of involved agencies and departments, ensuring the entire property is cleaned-up.

• Respond to all incoming complaints concerning a pplicable zoning violations.

• Performs other duties as needed or assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

• Local, State, and Federal code as they apply to code enforcement.

• Local, State, and Federal property rights as they apply to code enforcement.

• Excellent telephone, in-person, and customer service etiquette.

• Basic terminology of land use regulations.

Skills and Abilities to:

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, managers, employees, other agencies, and the public.

• Follow verbal and written procedures and instructions.

• Great attention to detail.

• Strong time management and organization skills.

• Support and assist other staff and/or departmental personnel in their enforcement tasks as required by advising, interpreting, and verifying ordinance information.

• Answer questions and provide information and direction regarding land use requirements and ordinance application.

• Research and gather information for active compliance cases in preparation for court hearings. 

• Read, write, understand, and interpret code and zone enforcement ordinanc s.

• Computer literate with standard office tools, such as Microsoft Office Suite and software related to job specific duties.
