Clinical Track Rank DOQ, Director of Clinical EducationTHE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL THERAPY AND ATHLETIC TRAINING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH is seeking an outstanding faculty candidate for a 1.0 FTE, (Clinical) Track position, rank dependent upon qualifications. This job will have two primary roles: (1) Oversight of Clinical Education as the Director of Clinical Education (DCE) and (2) Course Instruction.Oversight of Clinical Education:Leads a team of 4 Associate Directors of Clinical Education to coordinate clinical placements for DPT students across all pathways (residential and hybrid).Duties include: oversight of clinical contracts assuring compliance of students and clinical sites with requirements for health care student participation in health care settings assessment of student and clinical instructor performance during, and feedback about, the c clinical experiences counseling with students and clinical instructors as needed coordinating visits to clinical sites, assignment of grades for the students evaluation of the clinical education program.Course Instruction:The DCE develops ongoing professional continuing education opportunities for clinical instructors to improve clinical teaching and mentoring skills. Classroom teaching, teaching in specific courses will depend upon the candidates clinical background, qualifications, and certifications. Expectations for this faculty line also include scholarship/creative activities and service. As a faculty member, the appropriate individual will participate in classroom and/or online didactic teaching, student supervision in laboratory settings and will be expected to integrate their expertise by participating in the existing entry-level DPT, post-professional continuing education programs, or Rehabilitation Sciences PhD program. Such participation will include teaching, mentoring, and serving on related committees as well as professional activities and service. Development of clinically focused scholarship is an expectation for long-term retention and advancement in rank.Qualifications The Department seeks physical therapists licensed or eligible for licensure in Utah with a minimum of 5 years of clinical teaching and/or site coordinator of clinical education experience. Candidates should also: possess strong communication, organization, interpersonal, problem-solving, and counseling skills; have current knowledge and skill in the use of information and computer technology (e.g., word processing, e-mail, database) or proven ability to learn these skills; be able to work with students with special needs based on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); possess knowledge of legislative, regulatory, legal, and practice issues affecting clinical education, students, and the profession; design and conduct collaborative research in clinical education or related areas; be able to initiate, administer, assess, and document all aspects of the clinical education program; be able to work independently and coordinate work with colleagues and peers; and, be able to travel as needed. Previous experience in classroom, teaching laboratory, and clinical teaching and mentoring of physical therapy students is required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required. Additional preferred requirements include: prior teaching experiences in a physical therapist academic program and/or administrative experience in clinical practice; an earned doctoral degree, or enrolled in, or desire to pursue doctoral studies; knowledge of educational, management, and adult learning theory and principles; active in clinical practice, especially as applicable to clinical education; active in professional activities at local, state, and/or national levels and an earned status as an APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with students, faculty and staff, patients and other members of the community are essential. Residency training is available in Acute Care, Cardiopulmonary, Neurologic, Orthopedic, Pediatric, and Sports Physical Therapy. The program in Physical Therapy has a long-standing tradition of excellence that dates back to the admission of its first class in 1969. The current program has 3 pathways, a Salt Lake Residential pathway 50 students), a St George Residential pathway (currently 18 students with a goal enrollment of 24 students) and a hybrid pathway (currently with 50 students and a goal enrollment of 75 students). CAPTE accredited the program most recently in 2018 and the program is a proud member of the America Council of Academic Physical Therapy.
