The General Accounting department within Financial Services at the University of Utah is seeking a motivated and career minded individual to join our team. The Accountant position is responsible for completion of monthly bank reconciliation in accordance with the University deadlines and policies; review of campus-wide journal entries into the general ledger; preparation of account reconciliations and investigation of variances. The position will also be responsible for working with assigned departments to perform financial business activities in an environment of excellent customer service. The position will use accounting skills to perform financial support functions for the departments, provide departments with accurate and timely information to make decisions, and ensure efficient transaction processing.

Responsibilities
Reconcile and analyze general ledger and bank account entries and prepare all necessary journal entries for depository bank accounts
Reconcile and analyze general ledger and bank account entries and prepare all necessary journal entries for disbursement bank accounts
Manage and maintain reconciliation folder contents in the General Accounting Box folder
Manage and update petty cash account balances and yearly audit
Assist in creating and maintaining bank reconciliation related procedural documents
Assist with daily journal processing
Assist with month-end close
Assist in preparation for audit
Customer oriented assistance with accounting questions from departments and outside callers by researching and interpreting data
Assist in department-wide process improvement initiatives
Research and data entry for projects as assigned
Prepare and post journal entries as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field, plus one year related experience or equivalency (two years of related work experience can be substituted for one year of education) required. A thorough understanding of general ledger accounting practices, cost analysis and accounting principles, as well as demonstrated analytical, problem solving, human relations and effective communication skills also required.
Knowledge of PeopleSoft or Access databases may be preferred in some areas.
Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
Preferences
Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
Proficientin computer software applications/demonstrated competence with Microsoft Excel and Word.
Ability to interpret and apply accounting theory; to work accurately with numerical detail; to analyze, consolidate, and to interpret accounting data.
Familiarity with PeopleSoft
