ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER – Amazon Air (AIR)

The Regional Air Hub AGM is an extraordinarily complex leadership role, requiring an executive to flawlessly balance daily execution with the long-term development of a team. The role requires a detailed understanding (and ability to balance) every operational component of a facility, including employee needs, IT, and process technology and improvement. A successful AGM will be able to provide strong vision and direction for the team while fostering bottoms-up input and participation in process-improvement from all levels of the organization. The Regional Air Hub AGM serves as one of the faces of the organization to potentially thousands of employees and the entire community where the facility is located. Key Strategic Objectives:

  • Own and deliver the operational budget of approximately $50-100 million

  • Set clear goals for safety, customer experience and productivity, and successfully deliver on them

  • Build the culture of your operation in support of our 14 leadership principles

  • Obsess over customers

  • Support the scalable growth of the company by developing and enabling the success of each member of the leadership team

Objectives include:

  • Engage all levels of the organization to remove waste from operations processes employing Lean/Six Sigma practices

  • Oversee product flow in a high-speed package sortation environment

  • Implement new processes as required in order to improve efficiency and to support growth in new product lines and services

  • Implement and distribute best practices to/from the AIR Operations sites

Focus and Deliverables for first 12 months include:

  • Build a culture which promotes a "safety first" mentality for the warehouse and ramp operations

  • Balance mentoring and development of new leaders while achieving customer and cost metrics

  • Successfully leverage Lean/Six Sigma tools and concepts to drive process-improvement and associate engagement

  • Develop proficiency in Amazon language and skill functionality to ensure the capability of spreading and teaching the Amazon culture

  • Drive the quality of individual standard-work to ensure critical quality and safety practices are followed

  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with upstream and downstream customers/suppliers, including FC’s, gateways, sort-centers, and delivery stations

  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with support teams, including SEA-based support, HR, Finance, Safety, Loss Prevention, NCC, Air Ops, etc.

  • Build and maintain sound and effective business relationships with 3P contractors/providers

Eligibility requirements

• Individuals hired into this position will have unescorted access privileges to airport security identification display areas (SIDA). For this reason, eligibility for this role will be limited to individuals who pass a security screening, as required by the FAA, DHS, and TSA (as applicable).

• Must be able to secure appropriate airport authority and/or US Customs security badges, if applicable.

• This position requires an employee’s full and unimpaired skills and judgment to safely execute their job duties to ensure the safety and security of Amazon AIR personnel, third-party contractors, Airport personnel, cargo, and equipment. This position is therefore designated as a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory pre-employment and, where permitted, post-hire drug testing.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • The ability to lead and execute through Lean/Six Sigma, and to then proceed to influence peers to adopt these best practices throughout the organization

  • Successful history of continually implementing improvement initiatives, specifically Lean/Six Sigma practices, in a plant or distribution environment

  • Customer-focused attitude to improving throughput by leveraging critical support staff (finance, HR, tech) to achieve more efficient processes

  • Strong analytical approach to problem-solving with a metrics-driven focus on frugality without sacrificing safety or the customer-experience

  • Thinks curiously; leads the team to success by driving continuous improvement to achieve results

  • Knowledge of warehouse management systems including robotics, high-speed conveyor systems and other highly automated equipment

  • Effective management of operations comprising both salaried and hourly staff of at least 250

  • The ability to effectively teach, lead and manage within all areas of the operation and coach staff to their full potential

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully develop others into higher levels of leadership

  • Experience working in, and dealing with, inclement weather conditions

  • Development and execution of contingency plans due to operational disruptions (weather, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in a technical field and an MBA

  • 5 years aviation/air cargo/ramp operations management experience

  • Exhibits excellent judgment
