Job Responsibilities:

Support the clinical team in scheduled visits:

  • Anticipate and perform appropriate nursing functions in preparation and/or support of patient appointment with NP/PA/MD.

  • provide for patient care, comfort and safety during visits

  • maintain accurate and complete documentation of all interactions using electronic medical record

  • collection and preparation of lab specimens/phlebotomy skills

  • provide education and counseling during clinical interactions

  • administer medications/immunizations/therapeutic and/or diagnostic procedures per provider order or protocol

  • Assist in monitoring patient flow, participate in maintenance of clinical areas/equipment

  • Delegate appropriate tasks to medical assistants

  • Follow up on radiology and laboratory reports

Independently triage patients via phone, patient chat and in-person:

  • Assess and evaluate student symptoms, reactions, and progress to determine appropriate disposition Intervene directly using sound principles of nursing practice; or consult the appropriate care provider; or schedule provider appointment as needed

  • Provide home care advice and patient education

  • Assess wounds and determine appropriate dressing

  • Provide first aid and responds to walk-in emergencies (i.e. anaphylaxis)

  • Determine immunization and tuberculosis status, administer appropriate immunizations using standing orders

  • Utilize standing orders for minor acute illness where appropriate

  • Provide a variety of preventative screening services including tuberculosis and STI screening for students. Review health history questionnaires and follows up as appropriate

  • Participate in ongoing professional development and/or participate on department, division and university committees, task forces and projects as assigned and appropriate for the role

  • Contribute to other processes for the general welfare of the students; promotion of team building; delivery of quality comprehensive clinical services, health education program planning and implementation as deemed appropriate and/or as requested

  • Manage and maintain confidential and private information; uses confidential, sensitive and/or private records and information, protects information appropriately

  • Establish, build and maintain effective working relationships based on respect, empathy and honesty with diverse groups and individuals

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Associate Director of Clinical Services

Required Qualifications:

Education/Experience/Certification:

  • Associate’s degree in Nursing

  • Certification, professional license, or credential: Registered Nurse

  • Minimum of 3 years of nursing experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Majority of tasks are performed standing or walking at a brisk pace; minimal lifting required

  • Hazards: minimal exposure to medical waste

Skills:

  • Proficient in triage, immunizations, assessment of emergency situation, phlebotomy

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team

  • Competence using electronic medical records, word processing, email, and electronic calendaring software

  • Ability to prioritize tasks

  • Effective interpersonal, written, and electronic communications skills, including the ability to convey complex information in accessible terms to diverse or multicultural audiences.

  • Knowledge of Deaf culture, American Sign Language (ASL), or willingness to learn

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1 year outpatient experience, college health experience preferred

  • Experience with telephone triage

Job Summary:

This is a professional nursing position responsible for providing health care to students.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Clinical Services, staff nurse provides triage, emergency care and, primary care services including health education and management to students to elevate personal health awareness and support student success.

RIT serves over 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students, including approximately 1500 deaf or hard of hearing students enrolled in the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, one of RIT’s nine colleges. This is a 12 month position that may include occasional evening or weekend responsibilities.
