University of Rochester Information Analyst in Rochester, New York

Responsibilities

Job Summary:

Supporting revenue cycle management, the medical coding analyst will work in a complex and collaborative environment that will require independent action to review issues affecting optimal workflow and/or reimbursement. Responsible for gathering, interpreting, and summarizing data into recommended actions. This role will also serve as the liaison for assigned coding related projects. Functions include, but are not limited to: assessing data from different sources; delving into data to discover discrepancies and patterns; partnering with United Business Office colleagues, departments or other stakeholders to ensure accurate and timely payments from third party payers. The coding analyst will be a diligent problem solver, creatively using data to present findings and recommendations to the UBO management team who will act on those recommendations for revenue cycle optimization. The coding analyst must have effective problem solving skills and demonstrated in-depth general coding knowledge and high-level understanding of data reporting, analytics and revenue cycle operations. This position reports directly to Associate Director of Coding.

Key Functions and Expected Performances:

With general guidance from the UBO Assoc. Director of Professional Medical Coding or a Coding Manager:

40% Assist UBO coding management, performing in-depth analysis of services completed under coding that will improve charging and business operations. Comprehensive review of coding workqueues; understanding and validating the linked rules. Workqueue analysis (utilizing data from all sources); interpreting the data and then summarizing it into recommended actions. This may require analyzing reports from available internal reporting systems and external payer resources.

25% Responsible for analysis/trend of accounts receivable denials identified as a coding denial. This includes the analysis of data from charge creation to insurance response; identifying the root cause and recommending a solution. This may include collaborating and reviewing both coding and A/R procedures

to confirm accurate revenue and escalating to the Associate Director or manager for additional investigation and action plan development when required.

20% Works with Revenue Integrity, Revenue Cycle Advisors and/or business operations on department specific revenue cycle charging topics and new code review. Performs research utilizing coding tools to validate coding requirements according to required guidelines. This may include reviewing new charge codes to interpret coding language and payer website information identify the coding required elements to ensure successful reimbursement.

10% Supporting coding operations with research and/or analysis that will provide requested input on heat tickets allowing clear explanation of reason for the heat ticket.

5% Serve as a resource and subject matter expert for United Business Office on special projects. May perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Required:

  2. Bachelor’s Degree and 1-2 of related relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience

  3. Demonstrated organizational and problem-solving skills

  4. Effective written and verbal communication skills

  5. Preferred:

  6. Certified professional medical coder in good standing

  7. Demonstrated experience with data reporting tools

  8. 1+ years billing office experience with strong working knowledge of the professional billing software applications

  9. 1-year data reporting experience

Pay Range

Pay Range: $20.00 - $38.46 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
