About our team:

The Electrochemical Cell Engineer will report within the Systems Engineering Team for Energy Storage Solutions. This team will focus on systems development of advanced Energy Solutions for lift truck applications including Lithium-Ion Batteries, Fuel Cells, and other energy storage/generation products/systems. The Energy Storage Solutions (ESS) business unit is a “startup within an established, global company” at the Rochester Toyota Material Handling North America Energy Solutions Development Center, leading technical aspects of an emerging business with the support of an established world known company and brand.

About the position:

The Electrochemical Cell Engineer will provide expertise on lithium-ion cell and hydrogen-air fuel cell technology to support development of these systems for application in Toyota Material Handling products. This role will drive efforts across a broad scope of the energy technology pipeline: Concept Assessment, Road-Map Development, Advanced Product Engineering, and Product Engineering. The Electrochemical Cell Engineer will be the primary expert on these topics within the Energy Storage Systems unit in Rochester. They will also communicate and collaborate with Toyota Material Handling engineers globally including in Europe and in Japan to develop best practices across the company.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide expertise on cell fundamentals

  • Evaluation of emerging cell technology and assessment of relevance for material handling applications.

  • Cell selection including supplier interaction, assessment of supplier data, and internal testing of cell candidates.
  • Cell testing including test strategy, test planning, protocol development, and data analysis.
  • Cell performance modeling including polarization behavior and heat generation.
  • Cell life modeling including calendar and duty cycle impacts.

  • Providing expertise on cell integration into systems

  • Ensure cell requirements accuracy and sufficiency for proper integration into modules and systems.

  • Serve as technical point of contact to Design Team and System Test and Validation Team to support module and system-level development efforts (including mechanical, electrical and BMSsoftware).
  • System performance, life, and thermal modeling in the integrated system including impacts of cell-to-cell variation.
  • System safety guidance related to cell performance (e.g. thermal runaway propagation in support of UL 2580 certification of Li-ion systems).
  • Support development of second-life strategies for used cells and systems.

About you:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • 5+ years of electrochemical cell technology and system integration experience.
  • Solid capability with data analysis tools (e.g. Advanced Excel, Matlab).
  • Experience modeling electrochemical cell polarization loss terms.

It would be great if you had:

  • Master’s Degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • 10+ years of electrochemical cell technology and system integration experience.
  • Advanced capability with data/system analysis tools (e.g. Matlab/Simulink).
  • Experience modeling electrochemical cell degradation impacts.
  • Experience with UL Testing and Certification.

About the total compensation package:

Salary - $110,700 - $192,400 per year. Compensation depends on the selected candidate’s education and experience.
