POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Microbiology Supervisors and Chief Supervisor, and with latitude for the exercise of independent judgement, participates in the management of the technical, administrative, quality and personnel management functions of the laboratory section. This Assistant Supervisor primarily provides general supervision and technical support to the night shift laboratory section. Functions as a Medical Technologist II as needed.

SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED:

Under supervision of the Bacteriology Supervisors and Chief Supervisor.

SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXCERCISED:

Responsibility for night laboratory section staff. May directly supervise staff, or specific section areas as assigned.

MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Standard and complex laboratory instrumentation, standard office equipment such as telephone, PC, Laboratory Information System (LIS), calculator, copier, printer and fax machine.

TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES : Beyond mastery of standard laboratory protocol and methods, demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of the theory and technical applications of clinical microbiology and demonstrates thorough understanding of the clinical relevance of laboratory tests. Keeps abreast of new developments in his/her areas of specialty and clinical microbiology in general. All work is performed according to methods and standards.

  1. Performs review of laboratory results and reports. Reviews data for accuracy, troubleshoots problems and discrepancies. (5%)

  2. Serves as a technical consultant to laboratory staff and other medical personnel regarding laboratory procedures and interpretations of technical aspects of laboratory testing. (10%)

  3. Oversees daily operations with accountability for the professional conduct and technical performance of personnel. Counsels and directs personnel as needed. (10%)

  4. Assists in assignment scheduling of personnel. (10%)

  5. May be responsible for formulating, offering input on and /or revising laboratory protocols. (2%)

  6. Helps ensure that the laboratory complies with regulations, assists in preparation for inspections by CAP, NYS and EH&S and audits. (2%)

  7. Responsible for the communication of patient care problems to Supervisors and Director. (2%)

  8. Assists with coordination of special projects and development of new procedures. (2%)

  9. Participates in the interview and performance review process. (2%)

  10. May provide supervisory coverage in the absence of the Supervisor. (5%)

  11. Performs the duties of a Medical Technologist II and maintains proficiency. (50%)

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in related science and 4 years clinical experience or Master’s degree in related science and 2 years of relevant experience. NYS license in the Clinical Laboratory Technologist category required.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $38.7 - $50.31 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
