Mayo Clinic Research Fellow - Enteric Neuroscience Program in Rochester, Minnesota

Why Mayo Clinic

Mayo Clinic is top-ranked in more specialties than any other care provider according to U.S. News & World Report. As we work together to put the needs of the patient first, we are also dedicated to our employees, investing in competitive compensation and comprehensive benefit plans (https://jobs.mayoclinic.org/benefits/) – to take care of you and your family, now and in the future. And with continuing education and advancement opportunities at every turn, you can build a long, successful career with Mayo Clinic. You’ll thrive in an environment that supports innovation, is committed to ending racism and supporting diversity, equity and inclusion, and provides the resources you need to succeed.

Responsibilities

The Beyder laboratory is led by a physician-scientist and is a part of the Enteric Neuroscience Program (ENSP) at the Mayo clinic, which is one of the largest groups of physicians and scientists who study the enteric nervous system and gastrointestinal physiology. The ENSP group has a long history of paradigm shifting discoveries in the field of gastrointestinal physiology and we are looking for new team members who will continue this distinguished tradition.

The Beyder laboratory works collaboratively within a growing group that studies the mechanisms mechanosensing by the gut in health and disease. We study the gut from “molecules to humans” and answer novel questions, such as “does the gut feel touch?” We publish in high impact journals (Gastroenterology, PNAS, Cell) and our work is supported by the NIH, including a highly prestigious NIH New Innovator funding.

We provide extensive resources, mentorship, and a collaborative environment for our trainees to succeed to the next steps in their careers. Our trainees present within ENSP and Beyder lab, participate in ENSP journal club, mentor graduate and undergraduate students, get mentored by the PI and senior scientists, and go on to impactful and independent careers.

We strive to foster a diverse, collaborative, and supportive environment. We celebrate each other’s birthdays monthly, have twice yearly retreats at fun locations to celebrate our accomplishments and ourselves.

You will have an opportunity to explore the fascinating realm of Nobel-winning mechanosensitive ion channels and enigmatic world of “gut touch.” We use cutting-edge research aimed at understanding the gut’s sensory perception and implications. The lab broad “molecules to human” focus means that there are several possible projects, ranging from electrophysiology and calcium imaging to novel in vitro and in vivo mechanobiology assays using novel mouse models and human tissues and organoids.

Qualifications

The most important qualifications are self-motivation and eagerness to learn. The successful applicant for the current post-doctoral fellow position will have a strong background in wet bench experimentation, regardless of whether it is in molecular primary focus.
