Job Summary and Qualifications

The Nurse Manager is responsible for ensuring coordinated delivery of consumer care in accordance with the established standards of care, mental health practice and facility policy, goals and objectives. This position assists in contributing to the facility’s philosophy, objectives, education, and quality improvement efforts, while providing supervision to the nursing staff assigned. The Nurse Manager is responsible for ensuring appropriate nursing coverage for BHS Units which includes managing staffing schedules, managing staff call-outs, and managing daily staffing needs as they arise. The Nurse Manager may on occasion be responsible for working the unit as the Charge Nurse. The nurse manager engages with staff to establish quality results and an increase in patient satisfaction for the unit.

  • Responsible for day to day operations and leadership of BH patient care units. Assumes responsibility to ensure that staff are following policy and procedure, and completes corrective action for staff with policy violations.

  • Assumes overall operational responsibility for assigned shift. Provides leadership on assigned shift through making assignments consistent with experience, competency and mix of staff. Assumes role of “charge” nurse and/or delegates various tasks to staff RN’s. Provides cross coverage for Utilization Review.

  • Maintains a competent staff through working with the Program Director to assess staffing needs and by facilitating unit orientation for new staff. Provides coaching, teaching, evaluating and counseling to unit based staff and assisting with the same for flexi staff. Deals with staff performance issues in a timely manner.

  • Performs and/or provides supervision to assure the completion of admission and shift RN assessments.

  • Plans treatment in conjunction with other treatment team members. Assures an initial treatment plan is initiated at admission and in collaboration with the assigned Clinical Care Manager assures an interdisciplinary treatment plan is formulated within 72 hours and reviewed and revised according to policy.

  • Provides and/or supervises direct physical patient care. Assures staff is competent to provide assigned patient treatments and procedures. If indicated, facilitates additional staff education to increase competency.

  • Provides and/or supervises provision of behavioral health care interventions utilizing the least restrictive interventions.

What qualifications you will need:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date

  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date

  • Registered Nurse, Registered Nurse Diploma

  • Required - Two or more years acute care behavioral health nursing experience with demonstrated leadership ability. Six months previous experience in an area of management or leadership.

  • Preferred – One year previous successful behavioral health nursing management experience, in an acute care setting. Previous experience in assigned behavioral health specialty area: i.e. Child, Adolescent, Adult, Geropsych, or CD.

  • Required: Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing, Associates in Nursing required, with completion of Bachelor’s Degree within three years. Preferred M.S.N.
