Microsoft Corporation Software Engineer II in Redmond, Washington

Microsoft Azure Boost is a highly distributed, massively scalable, and ubiquitously accessible cloud storage system designed to scale out and serve the entire world. Azure storage already runs at Exascale (storing Exabytes of data) and we will be scaling our designs over the next decade to support Zetta scale (storing Zettabytes of data).

Our development path includes designing, implementing, and deploying new hardware-based accelerators – utilizing the latest technologies including FPGAs, RDMA, PCIe and NVMe. Our group is developing new Azure core infrastructure for hardware accelerated remote storage. Our team is responsible for the integration of hardware & software, end-to-end validation and overall reliability, security, and compliance of our product at scale in the data center.

Our team is looking for a Software Engineer II i nterested in a diverse role spanning the whole product from low level embedded hardware through to data center deployment & reliability.

As a Software Engineer II i n Azure Hardware Storage team you will be part of the team that changes the nature of storage for Azure customers by increasing customer storage performance whilst also reducing cost overhead for Azure. Responsibilities

  • System software architecture, design & development for hardware from prototyping through to the datacenter.

  • Hardware & software deployment, failure investigation, root cause analysis and monitor health through telemetry.

  • Monitoring performance & reliability analytics at scale for high availability customer facing cloud software & hardware.

  • Automation infrastructure development for system validation of cloud services in the datacenter.

  • Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and guides other engineers by developing and following the playbook, working on call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions, alerting stakeholders about status and initiates actions to restore system/product/service for simple and complex problems when appropriate.

  • Drive for quality in everything you do and continuously improve the quality of the systems on which you work.

  • Clear communication and cross-team collaboration skills.

  • A track record of successful results across multiple ship cycles with proven experience shipping high reliability products to customers.

  • Collaborate across team boundaries to define and drive team charter and vision.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, PowerShell or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 2+ years Software development design, development, debugging, testing, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills to root cause system issues.

Other Qualifications:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science

  • OR related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, PowerShell or Python

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, PowerShell or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Understanding of system software, storage protocols and operating system internals. e.g. memory management, scheduling, interrupts, threading, etc...

  • Experience in

  • the design, implementation, debugging and testing of operating system drivers (kernel mode and user mode) specifically Windows Driver and Kernel components,

  • AND Azure or equivalent cloud services - Azure Data Explorer (Kusto Query Language), portal, disks, storage & virtual machines,

  • AND shipping & maintaining high reliability cloud storage services.

  • Ability to

  • work on a large codebase and willing to take on a wide variety of challenges.,

  • AND handle periodic live service on-call responsibilities and work in dev-ops mode.

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $94,300 - $182,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $120,900 - $198,600 per year.
