Microsoft Corporation Research Intern - Networking Research Group in Redmond, Washington

Research Internships at Microsoft provide a dynamic environment for research careers with a network of world-class research labs led by globally-recognized scientists and engineers, who pursue innovation in a range of scientific and technical disciplines to help solve complex challenges in diverse fields, including computing, healthcare, economics, and the environment.

The mission of the Networking Research Group (NRG) Group at Microsoft Research is to invent and research technologies that make Microsoft's networks, services, and devices indispensable to the world. The NRG group focuses on basic and applied research in all areas related to networked systems, IoT, sensing, and mobile computing. We build proof-of-concept systems, engage with academia, publish scientific papers, publish software for the research community, and transfer cutting-edge technologies to Microsoft’s product groups. The NRG group has dominated top academic conferences including ACM SIGCOM, the flagship annual conference of the ACM Special Interest Group on Data Communication, and USENIX NSDI, Symposium on Networked Systems Design and Implementation, and has had massive impact on the Azure Network by productizing research technologies including Software Defined Networking, Hardware-accelerated Datapath, and Network Verification.M,

We are looking for research interns with stellar empirical research and development skills and backgrounds in technologies underlying networks, systems, sensing, wireless networks, and edge computing. The ideal candidates should have profiency to work with researchers at Microsoft to push forward research agendas, be a team player in a collaborative and supportive environment with outstanding programming skills. Applicants should demonstrate depth of knowledge in distributed systems and operating systems, and demonstrate experience in low-level programming, experimentation, and modeling.

Responsibilities

Research Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Research Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, Research Interns are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a master's or PhD program in Computer Science or a related STEM field.

  • Have at least one year of experience with systems building.

Other Requirements

  • Research Interns are expected to be physically located in their manager’s Microsoft worksite location for the duration of their internship.

  • In addition to the qualifications above, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position. Note that reference letters cannot be requested until after you have submitted your application, and furthermore, that they might not be automatically requested for all candidates. You may wish to alert your letter writers in advance, so they will be ready to submit your letter.

Preferred Qualifications

One or more of:

  • Ability to think unconventionally to derive creative and innovative solutions.

  • Knowledge of large models, and experience training them at scale, or running inference.

  • Experience programming hardware, e.g. software defined radio, routers, switches in datacenters.

  • Systems building expertise.

  • Experience processing large data sets.

  • Experience with networking operations.

Applied Sciences IC2 - The typical base pay range of this role across the U.S. is USD $5,090 - $10,120 per month. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $6,690 - $11,030 per month.

There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Franscisco Bay areaRequired Qualifications and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $8,060 - $13,240 per month.
