Microsoft Corporation Principal Thermal Architect in Redmond, Washington

The Azure Platform Architecture team is looking for a Principal Thermal Architect to drive the architecture for complex systems ranging from Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), to general purpose compute, High Performance Computing (HPC), storage, and other specialized programs. This role has responsibilities including concept generation in CAD, and the creation and analysis of thermal designs using first order calculations and Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. The Thermal architect will also collaborate with the System and Mechanical Architects on concept proposals, critical evaluations, requirements capture, prototype engineering, and documentation support for design/planning reviews. Once a program is approved from a conceptual level, the thermal architect will partner with the development team to ensure a smooth transition to full product development.

The Azure Platform Architecture team is part of a broader hardware and infrastructure organization known as the Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE). SCHIE is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and is responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's 200+ online businesses including Teams, OneDrive, Office 365, Xbox Live, Skype, Bing, MSN and the Microsoft Azure platform globally. We architect and design the server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions to support these businesses. Responsibilities

  • Drive the high-level thermal design direction for complex systems ranging from GPU, to general purpose compute, HPC, storage, and other specialized programs.

  • Create robust, scalable, secure, and extensible thermal architecture solutions that account for current and anticipated industry/competitive needs

  • Distill and articulate architectural tradeoffs in the thermal space in terms of key metrics such as feasibility, performance, cost, risk, and schedule

  • Partner with the platform and mechanical architects to drive the design direction

  • Acquire and share expert knowledge of multiple technical areas within and across teams working on similar products

  • Look for opportunities to generate intellectual property to help strengthen Microsoft’s position as a leader in Cloud Computing

  • Drive and influence technology providers and design partners to develop optimal components and solutions to meet the future requirements for Azure

  • Partner within the industry and standards bodies to create standards and form factors key to next generation solutions

  • Collaborate with the hardware development team to ensure seamless transition from architecture to implementation

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • 9+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 1+ years of Thermal Architecture/design experience with liquid cooled systems or infrastructure

O ther Requirements :

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 15+ years of technical engineering experience in mechanical/ thermal engineering

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 10+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience.

  • Proficient with PTC CREO Elements/Pro Engineer or Solidworks 3D-CAD software

  • Advanced knowledge of analytical tools/processes for heat transfer, fluid flow, and material science

  • Ability to influence and partner across the many facets of the Azure hardware organization

  • Experience with platforms deployed in hyperscale or cloud datacenters

  • Experience with prototyping and high-volume manufacturing methods

  • Knowledge of and application experience with heat transfer components including heat exchangers and fluid moving devices

  • Experience working with remote team members and JDM/ODM/OEM development partners

  • Ability to streamline and optimize the product definition during the design phase

  • Ability to generate and analyze architectural solutions, including directional cost analysis, feasibility and engineering degree of difficulty

Mechanical Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
