Microsoft Corporation Principal Software Engineering Manager in Redmond, Washington

Substrate is a key component of Microsoft 365, providing a set of intelligent, high-value services and a compliant environment that enables the next generation of transformative end-user experiences for Office and the entire company. As a leader of an initiative focused on the Substrate Platform, you will be responsible for creating a seamless and efficient experience across the collective offerings of the App & Data platform, AI, and COSMIC for E+D value-stream service developers. This initiative aims to provide the best platform for E+D developers to plan, create, and operate intelligent, secure, compliant, and high-quality services that accelerate time to market and meet the expectations of Microsoft 365 customers.

As a Principal Software Engineering Manager, you will coach and guide your team to help them do their best work and grow, defining and fostering an identity for the team that includes a reputation for high quality, reliability, and inclusivity. You will also define the business goals for the team and create and execute a plan to meet those goals, building a vision for changing the underlying technology of the service and guiding the team through landing it while maintaining the availability of the live site. Collaboration is key, and you will strive to understand the motivations and goals of the teams you are working with and work towards a better solution together.

Responsibilities

  • Work with a team of remote engineers to help them succeed.

  • Provide hands-on technical leadership: architecture, design, code reviews, development, quality assurance, observability, and live site.

  • Build relationships with partners within Microsoft to bring innovation to new and existing products.

  • Hire and retain top talent.

  • Foster a culture of inclusivity and disciplined software engineering practices to deliver business value, guided by data.

  • Be a mentor for the people on your team and help them grow.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 4+ years people management experience.

  • 4+ years industry experience developing enterprise grade software.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience leading engineering teams, delivering high quality software for customers.

Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
