Microsoft Corporation Principal Software Engineer in Redmond, Washington

Responsibilities

  • Partner with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a set of scenarios.

  • Lead identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform.

  • Lead by example and mentors others to produce extensible and maintainable code used across products.

  • Leverage subject-matter expertise of cross-product features with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project managers) to drive multiple group's project plans, release plans, and work items.

  • Hold accountability as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), mentoring engineers across products/solutions, working on-call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions.

  • Proactively seek new knowledge and adapts to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale and shares knowledge with other engineers.

  • Design, develop and operate large-scale geo distributed software services running on Kubernetes and Azure CosmosDB/Redis.

  • Adhere to modern software engineering practices through design and code reviews.

  • Write clean and optimized code, improve test coverage for services, organize and implement integration tests, and resolve problem areas. 

  • Consider testability, portability/monitoring, reliability, and maintainability, and understand when code is ready to be shared and delivered. 

  • Develop “best-in-class” engineering for our services by ensuring that the services and the components are well-defined and modularized, secure, reliable, diagnosable, actively monitored and reusable.

  • Gain a working understanding of Microsoft as a business and collaborate with stakeholders and architects to contribute to cohesive, end-to-end experiences for our users.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, or JavaScript

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 4+ years of experience with Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience with Kubernetes

  • Drive complex outcomes, partnering with teams across multiple time zones and across organizational boundaries – the scope of this role is division-wide.

  • Performance analysis and optimization of web services and software.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
