Microsoft Corporation Principal Research Scientist- Vision and Document Understanding in Redmond, Washington

Within AI Platform, the Cognitive Services team empowers developers and data scientists around the world to easily add AI capabilities to their apps. Our team is responsible for the research components that go into our Computer Vision and Document Understanding offerings. #aiplatform

We are looking for a Principal Research Scientist with a background in Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing and/or Artificial Intelligence to join our team. On the Document Understanding area, this includes topics like layout analysis, chart understanding, multi-page multi-document question answering, novel ways of leveraging large language models for document understanding and solving problems inherent to large language models (grounding, retrieval-based generation, etc.). On the Computer Vision area, this includes topics like object detection, activity detection, video anomaly detection, etc. Familiarity with modern large language/multimodal models and is a plus, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct pioneering research to propel the state-of-the-art in various tasks in Document Understanding and Computer Vision.

  • Work closely with fellow Research Scientists and Product Engineering teams to translate research outcomes into practical solutions.

  • Provide expertise and support to the engineering team on various challenges, fostering collaboration between research and practical application.

  • Take charge of the research agenda from problem definition to algorithm and model development.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in relevant field AND 3+ years related-research experience

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Experience in leading research efforts in Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing and/or Artificial Intelligence targeted at productization.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience publishing academic papers (as a lead author or essential contributor) in the top AI Conferences (e.g., CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, NIPS, ICML, ICLR, IJCV, PAMI, etc.).

  • Keen interest in real-world applications and impact, and 5+ years of experience in translating research into actual product innovation.

  • Demonstrable ability to define an ambitious, original research agenda, and technically lead a multi-disciplinary team.  

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, and familiarity with machine learning frameworks PyTorch.

Research Sciences IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
