Microsoft Corporation Principal Reliability Architect - Microsoft Azure in Redmond, Washington

In this Principal Reliability Architect - Microsoft Azure role, you will guide silicon providers toward new technologies, features, and system architectures that will deliver to the needs of Microsoft's core cloud businesses. You will work with platform architects and developers across layers of the Azure software stack to maximize use of hardware capabilities, improving Azure customer experience and operational efficiency. You will diagnose and react to fleet reliability issues when they arise, working with vendors and driving solutions across teams. Responsibilities

  • Identify and promote hardware capabilities that support Azure's business objectives, especially related to quality as experienced by end customers.

  • Lead engineer-to-engineer engagements with Azure's Si (Signal Integrity) providers to influence their product roadmaps and feature definitions, especially in the RAS (Reliability, Availability, Serviceability), Telemetry, and Quality of Service domains.

  • Collaborate with Microsoft partner teams - cloud services, Operating System (OS)/Hyper-V software, firmware, and hardware system infrastructure - to turn hardware features into end-to-end solutions that deliver business value.

  • Diagnose and resolve server reliability issues affecting the fleet, achieving improvements in service interruption rate, downtime, part replacement rate, and performance variability.

  • Monitor and adapt to research, industry, and technology trends affecting at-scale operation of future data centers.

  • Participate in industry standard bodies as needed to drive emerging technologies relevant for future data center systems.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of technical engineering experience in Silicon research and development with emphasis on reliability and monitoring, including areas such as RAS features, Design for Test, Si failure modes, error and performance telemetry, and/or testing techniques.

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years of technical engineering experience.

Other Qualifications:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of technical engineering experience in Silicon research and development with emphasis on reliability and monitoring, including areas such as RAS features, Design for Test, Si failure modes, error and performance telemetry, and/or testing techniques.

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 10+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience.

  • Production environment experience with hyperscale operating environments, such as cloud service providers or supercomputers.

  • Working knowledge of multiple server hardware components (e.g. CPUs, disks, GPUs, memory, NICs) and system software (e.g. Hypervisor, OS, Drivers, Firmware, BIOS).

  • Experience with SoC and platform architectures from multiple server component vendors (e.g. Intel, AMD, and Arm).

Hardware Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
