Microsoft Corporation Platform Principal Software Engineer - Graphics Processing Units in Redmond, Washington

The Windows & Devices team is on a journey to deliver iconic end-to-end products across hardware, software, and services that people love and use every day. A fundamental part of our work is building the next generation of the Windows Platform that integrates the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and Azure into Windows, enabling developers to build the AI-infused experiences people want. The Platform Architecture team in Windows & Devices is looking for Platform Principal Software Engineer - Graphics Processing Units (GPU) with specialized knowledge in Virtual Machine (VM) scheduling, Hypervisor technologies and familiarity with Virtual Graphics Processing Units (VGPU). This role demands a candidate who not only possesses deep technical proficiency in these areas but is also eager to dive into emerging technologies. As a Principal Engineer, you will play a pivotal part in shaping the future of Windows Cloud, focusing on optimizing virtualized environments for high-performance computing and graphics-intensive applications. Your responsibilities will include working on advanced solutions for scaling GPUs and working on other foundational technologies that contribute to the growth of the Windows business. Responsibilities

  • Partner with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project manager, technical lead) to determine user requirements for a set of scenarios. Leverage a variety of feedback channels to incorporate insights into future designs or solution fixes. Lead incorporation of appropriate continuous feedback loops measuring customer value, usage patterns, and other actionable metrics of value. Begin to determineadditional critical metrics.

  • Lead identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform. Lead identification of other teams and technologies that will be leveraged, how they will interact, and when one's own system may provide support to others.

  • Lead by example and mentor others to produce extensible and maintainable code used across products. Lead efforts to optimize, debug, refactor, and reuse code to improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI). Identify best practices and coding patterns and provides deep expertise in the coding and validation strategy. Create and applies metrics to drive the quality and stability of code, as well as appropriate coding patterns and best practices.

  • Participate in the architectural design process, including hypothesis testing, code plan refinement, design documentation, and decision-making.

  • Leverage subject-matter expertise of cross-product features with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project managers) to drive multiple group's project plans, release plans, and work items. Break down long-term project vision into milestones as part of an overall roadmap. Guide other members for project estimation and escalates any issue that would cause a major delay.

  • Remain current by investing time and effort into staying abreast of current developments. Proactively seek new knowledge and adapts to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale and shares knowledge with other engineers.

  • Lead identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service or platform. Lead identification of other teams and technologies that will be leveraged, how they will interact, and when one's own system may provide support to others. Lead efforts to determine back-end dependencies associated with product, application, service, or platform functionality for the solution/product. Demonstrate deep understanding of up and downstream effects of solutions and work provided to ensure appropriate security and performance, driving reliability in the solutions, and optimize dependency chains and retrieves across teams. Identify areas of dependency and overlap with other teams or team members and drives coordination. Enable cross-teamcommunication and resolves conflicts between teams.

  • Maintain live service operations, act as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) for system monitoring, analyze telemetry data, contribute to automation and compliance processes, stay abreast of technological developments, and maintain communication with partners for user-centric product development.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java

  • OR equivalent experience. 

  • 4+ years of experience developing components for Windows, Linux, RTOS or similar systems. 

  • 2+ years of experience working on GPU software or virtualization platforms.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related technical field AND 10+ years software architecture and design experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java

  • OR master’s degree in computer science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C# or Java

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Familiarity with graphics APIs (such as DirectX, Vulkan, or OpenGL) and system level power and performance analysis and proficient in OS fundamentals.  

  • Demonstrated use of workload tracing tools such as GPUView. 

  • Ability to quickly ramp up on complex and unfamiliar codebase, and work across multiple teams to drive code quality and performance.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
