COUNTY OF BERKS Parks Support Mechanic (Parks & Recreation) in Reading, Pennsylvania

POSITION SUMMARY:  Performs skilled, semi-skilled, and routine maintenance tasks. Works in teams and independently with little supervision in the maintenance and repair of buildings, equipment, and grounds. This position may lead and instruct maintenance employees with lesser training and/or skills. May be required to serve in an on-call capacity. Employees in this class may be assigned varied tasks as needed.  POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Functions

  • Assists in the general maintenance and upkeep of the buildings, equipment, and grounds.
  • Performs minor repairs to facility equipment and structures (such as ballasts, lamps, plumbing fixtures, windows, doors, roofs, and other hardware) that do not require a license or certificate of any type.
  • Performs preventative maintenance tasks on site-specific equipment.  These tasks include but are not limited to oil changes, blade sharpening, greasing, and cleaning.
    • Assist in projects throughout the Parks & Recreation areas of responsibility including but not limited to: grounds and turf maintenance to athletic fields and common grounds e.g. remove trash, apply fertilizer, aerate turf, mow grass, line & edge fields, install bases and boxes, trim shrubs/trees and weeds, fill holes, plant trees/shrubs and plants. Wash courts; replace nets, repair/replace fencing and backstops.
    • Construct and fabricate structural park features e.g. shelters, signs, bulletin boards, benches, ramps, etc.; 
    • Perform light carpentry, masonry, electrical, plumbing and painting tasks.
    • Landscape grounds, gardens and trails, e.g. create/cleanout beds for planting, seed, plant aerate, prune, mulch, water, fertilize, weed and trim trees.
    • Install, inspect and maintain playground equipment to industry standards
    • Sanitize, deodorize, clean and stock restrooms e.g. toilets, sinks, floors, walls, showers
    • Collect, rake, mulch & blow leaves
    • Clear storm drains and drainage corridors
    • Repair washouts from heavy rain events
    • Perform storm damage clean up and restoration
    • Clean snow and ice from roads, walks i.e. plow, salt, cinder or stone
    • Load, haul materials, dirt & debris
    • Identify and remove fallen or hazardous trees
  • Assists with event and department program operations including, but not limited to; set-up

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • Must be at least 18 years of age. 
  • PA. Department of Agriculture pesticide license may be required. 
  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector certification may be required. 
  • Possession of valid Pennsylvania driver's license required, Commercial Drivers License may be required. 
  • Completion of accredited trades training course at the apprentice level or the equivalent in related training and experience. 
  • Minimum two (2) or more years experience as a grounds maintenance worker. 
  • Any equivalent combination of experience or training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. 

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • General knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment of the parks department, including knowledge of safety practices and procedures for equipment, tools and vehicles. 
  • Knowledge of the grounds maintenance terminology, tools, and equipment. 
  • Demonstrate initiative and ability to self motivate. 
  • Ability to analyze problems. 
  • Ability to adhere to all County policies and procedures. 
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with the general public and staff in a professional and courteous manner. 
  • Ability to consistently meet assigned deadlines. 
  • Ability to handle stress. 
  • Physical presence at the job is required. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs., bend, stoop, climb, and reach may be required multiple times on a daily basis. 
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods is expect d. Dirty conditions, temperature extremes (steam 150 degrees + to wind chill -10 degrees), high noise levels, and extreme weather conditions may be experienced. 
  • The incumbent must be able to operate and safely load a County vehicle (i.e. automobile, truck [with or without trailer], loader, tractor). 

*WORKING CONDITIONS: * Work is frequently performed around hazardous machinery and can involve some threat to personal safety if safety standards are not observed. Work is frequently performed in inclement weather. Work involves responding to emergencies on call, especially during periods of snow.
