Brown University Manager, Community-Engaged Learning in Providence, Rhode Island

Job Description:

The Manager, Community-Engaged Learning provides focused management of Swearer Center community-engaged scholarship initiatives that enable undergraduate students to integrate their academic coursework with community-based learning and research experiences. The position is responsible for a defined portfolio of engaged scholarship programs, which include for example: the Engaged Scholarship Certificate, the Civic Engagement Theme Community (in partnership with Residential Life), the Swearer Center Peer Advisors, and/or other new programs as developed.

The Manager designs and implements programming and systems related to engaged scholarship that scale and connect their work to other areas of the Swearer Center (co-curricular programs, research programs, campus and community partnerships, and operations / communications). The position: plans and implements events, workshops, and other programming that builds community among their portfolio cohorts; assists in the development and maintenance of key intra-university and extra-university relationships required to cultivate and sustain key programmatic and strategic partnerships of the Swearer Center; advises and mentors undergraduate students one-on-one and in groups; facilitates program evaluation and data tracking in collaboration with colleagues across the Center; and represents the Center at student-, faculty-, and community-facing events.

As a member of the Community-Engaged Learning staff, the manager may supervise 1-5 student staff, and reports to an Assistant Director or Director position.

Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 3-5 years’ relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Strong skills in management, program structure and processes, documentation and assessment.

  • Collaborative work style, strong team player, inclusiveness and flexibility; ability to build collaborations with diverse communities.

  • Proven track record in furthering university diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives while supporting students from historically underrepresented and/or minoritized backgrounds is required.

  • Track record of execution and change orientation: open-mindedness; focus on learning, assessment, constant improvement, and accountability; attention to detail.

  • Interest in and ability to engage, collaborate with, support, and educate undergraduate students; understanding of and ability to articulate the integration of community engagement and the goals of Brown’s undergraduate education.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Excellent organizational and multitasking skills. Ability to generate enthusiasm among students and practitioners in the field.

  • Ability to work occasional evening and weekend events/programs, including some holidays.

  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.

  • Experience with curricular advising and/or academic programs of study desirable.

  • Familiarity with or ability to learn and effectively use technological tools including the Google suite, Qualtrics, and project management software such as Basecamp.
